Versus Restaurant on Springfield Avenue in Maplewood has been serving happy clientele — and making “Best of” Lists — since 2001. Owned by husband and wife team Charlie Tutino and Jane Witkin, the restaurant is known for updated French classics rooted in tradition, served in a relaxed and hospitable atmosphere.

The holidays are a great time of year to visit Verjus. “In keeping with our policy of the past fifteen years, the menu at Verjus changes seasonally; in fact, it changes daily,” said Chef Tutino. In December, the restaurant continues to offer its updated bistro classics five nights a week, with rotating Friday prix-fixe themed dinners. The menus feature dishes from different parts of the world, all with a French flair. Coming up:

  • German 12/2 (see the mouthwatering menu attached here:

  • American Regional 12/9
  • Bistro 12/16
  • Italian 12/23

In addition, Verjus will be serving festive a la carte dinner menus on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. December menu choices often include gratin of cardone, beef bourguignon, cassoulet, Nantucket bay scallops (“delivered directly to Verjus – swimming one day, here the next, bypassing the market,” said Tutino) and winter fruit desserts including quince tarte tatin.

Verjus has been very favorably reviewed over the years by The New York Times, the Zagat Guide, the Star-Ledger and Inside Jersey Magazine, among others. Every year since 2007,  it has been designated as one of the “Top 25 Critics Choice”  Restaurants by New Jersey Monthly Magazine in its August issue.

“We always look forward to the winter holidays, which allow us to revisit so many of our seasonal favorites,” said Tutino.
