The Springfield Avenue Partnership (SAP) announced a calendar of events presented by Maplewood businesses and arts and cultural organizations through the month of February, in honor of Black History Month. Programs will include everything from art exhibits and music performances to free beauty services and a mentoring luncheon.

The Springfield Avenue Partnership invites community residents and visitors to celebrate Black History Month on the Avenue by participating in these fun and educational activities and events for children, families and adults. Some examples are: a special evening celebrating Mrs. Edna Lewis  – The First Lady of Southern Cooking with Chef Jesse at the Hilton Branch Library and learning the art of tying of head wraps and the history of Kente cloth at Akuaba Fashions, 1964 Springfield Avenue.

The month of celebrations is highlighted by an evening of music, art and delicious food, celebrated with friends and neighbors on Sunday, February 25 at Astah’s Gallery, 1897 Springfield Avenue at 6 pm. The Springfield Avenue Partnership and Astah’s Gallery present the event, which will feature the blues and jazz artist Keith Marks Band (www.foreignfunk.com). All are welcome to attend this free event.

The Partnership provided a grant of $100 as a supporting sponsor to any district business or community organization in the special improvement district that scheduled an event as part of the Black History Month celebration.

“The partnership is proud to sponsor these events on Springfield Avenue,” said SAP District Manager Julie Doran. “We are pleased so many businesses and organizations are offering exhibits, discussions and other celebrations in honor of Black History Month.”
