A Newstead jitney passenger who allegedly directed expletives and a racial slur towards the driver when exiting the bus on Wednesday evening, March 29, has been banned from South Orange jitney use.
The incident was reported by the jitney supervisor and a report was filed with statements from passengers who witnessed the incident.
According to South Orange Village President Sheena Collum, posting on Facebook, the decision to ban the rider was made after review by the South Orange Parking Authority counsel, the South Orange Police, and Parking Authority Executive Director Mark Hartwyk.
The passenger was then “contacted and informed that they would no longer be able to use the jitney service.”
In a statement, the Parking Authority stated, “We take this very seriously both for our driver’s and our passengers well being.”
For her part, Collum reiterated, “We take this very seriously, moved quickly and are disseminating the information now as the review has been completed…. This type of behavior is completely unacceptable and won’t be tolerated. Enjoy the walk to the train as you reflect on how your actions have consequences … and THANK YOU to all the witnesses who came forward.
