Two women were robbed at gunpoint by men wearing masks in Maplecrest Park last Thursday, according to Maplewood Police Chief Robert Cimino.

On Oct. 30 at approximately 8:30 p.m., two 25-year-old women (one a Maplewood resident and the other from Orange) were sitting on a bench near the intersection of Oakland Road and Plymouth Avenue, said Cimino, when they were approached by two men wearing hoodies with the lower parts of their faces covered. One man was carrying a gun.

The gunman took one of the women to her car, where some of her valuables were. The men took the women’s purses and cellphones, and fled into the park, said Cimino. Neither woman was injured.

Cimino said the women described the gun as having a red or orange tip, which makes it unclear whether it was a toy or a real gun. Detectives are continuing to investigate the case.
