District Appoints SOMS Principal, CHS Asst Principal, SMS Interim

The South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education on Monday filled three administrative vacancies.

Marianne Hess will serve as Interim Principal of South Mountain and its Annex. Lynn Irby will serve as Principal of South Orange Middle School.  Terry Woolard will serve as Assistant Principal at Columbia High School.

Hess replaces the retiring Tina Lehn. Irby replaces Joseph Uglialoro, who resigned earlier this summer. Woolard, who was previously in the district, replaces the retiring Michael Healy.

Both Irby and Woolard were recognized at the meeting as they were formally appointed.

Irby, who was raised in South Orange, has most recently worked as a high school principal in Newark. She is a graduate of SOMS and CHS.

“Thank you for trusting me with your children,” said Irby. “I’m thrilled to be back home.” She further explained her focus as an administrator. “Children come first,” she said. “My question is always, ‘Is it right for kids?’”

Woolard, who was until this appointment the Director, Educational Media and Technology for the district, was previously director of the Montrose Alternative School.

Woolard noted that people asked him about the shift from technology to administration. “I wanted to find more ways to work with students. I’m ready to get to work.” Woolard added, “I’m excited.”
