The South Orange-Maplewood School District will not hire a temporary teacher following the creation of a petition by parents of South Orange Middle School expressing concerns about the individual’s employment history.

SOMS Principal Lynn Irby posted a brief two sentence email on Sunday morning, Oct. 9, saying that Lawrence Henchey will not be taking a leave replacement position and that the district would continue to search for a temporary replacement for 8th grade ELA teacher Megan Alloway, who is taking personal leave.

Parents asked the district to reconsider its decision to hire Lawrence Henchey after discovering that he appeared to have been fired from his position in New Milford in 2014.

Parent Wendy Sachs created the petition and posted it on Saturday, Oct. 8 after performing an online search of the teacher and finding information about arbitration between New Milford and the teacher regarding his dismissal.

Village Green has reached out to the district for further comment.
