Columbia High School will start the 2016/17 season with a new coach. Gary Mobley, head football coach at Rahway High School for 11 years and currently still a physical education and health teacher there, is taking over from John Power, who resigned in April.

Mobley was the CHS assistant coach and defensive coordinator last year.

During his tenure as coach at Rahway, Mobley’s teams qualified for the playoffs nine out of 11 years and won a Sectional Title 1 season. He served as their outdoor track coach as well. His win-loss record was 74-44, with a .627 winning percentage.

A graduate of Temple University where he played football, Mobley was a football standout in high school who starred on back-to-back 11-0 North 2 Group 4 state championship teams during his junior and senior years.

“[Mobley] will be a great fit for our program,” said district spokeswoman Suzanne Turner.
