Oheb Shalom in South Orange Offers Activism Workshops for Teens

activistOheb Shalom Congregation in South Orange is currently offering a six week seminar for all teens in the area entitled “Becoming an Activist in the 21st Century.” The goal is to provide a platform for students to learn about the current pressing issues in today’s political climate, provide a safe space for them to express their views (that perhaps they don’t have in school) and for teens to learn how they can get involved and work for change.

acluMARCH 15: Julia Kaye, Attorney at ACLU

Julia Kaye is a staff attorney with the ACLU”s Reproductive Freedom Project. The ACLU stands up for the rights of all citizens, even when the cause is unpopular, and sometimes when nobody else will. Julia’s work focuses on cases involving women’s reproductive rights and their health choices.

Past speakers include: Clement Lee, an immigration attorney who works with refugees seeking asylum and LGBTQ immigrants currently being held in detention centers; Alison Baker, a political fundraiser and consultant for Sen. Michael Bennett & Sen. Chris Murphy, who spoke about how the Citizens United decision has affected her work, and how teens can get involved politically on the local level; and Yehuda Webster from Black Lives Matter who spoke on his work and bringing a Jewish voice to the movement.
