South Orange-Maplewood District to Host School Budget Workshop March 7

The South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education will be holding a series of meetings over the next few weeks as it refines, debates and works to approve a budget for the 2017/18 school year.

The next opportunity to hear testimony regarding the budget and participate in its direction is a workshop to be held at Montrose School in South Orange at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7. The meeting will not be live-streamed or broadcast live by the district but will be recorded and posted within 48 hours or its conclusion, according to a release from the district.

As reported last week, the South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education is looking to close a major budget gap as discussions continue.

Staying within the state-mandated 2% cap on tax levy increases, the district is looking at total revenue of $128.164 million and costs of about $130.5 million for 2017/18. In this scenario, costs would outstrip revenues by $2,368,663.

Should the Board of Education choose to use all of its banked cap of $1,475,575 (taxing power that has been “banked” in previous years) that difference reduces to $893,088 — still a daunting deficit. The tax levy impact of a budget using the full banked cap would be a 3.39% increase, according to District Business Administrator Paul Roth.

SOMSD 2017-2018 School Budget

How will your tax dollars be used to support our local public schools as they strive to

prepare each and every student for post-secondary educational success and to educate all

students to be responsible and productive members of the global society at large?

Whether you have children enrolled in SOMSD schools or not, the school budget affects every resident of South Orange and Maplewood.  Our property taxes fund our schools.  In addition, the quality of education and extracurricular activities offered by our schools has a tremendous impact on property values and desirability of our two towns.

The 2017-2018 Preliminary School Budget is being developed to support the district goals set by the Board of Education.  The district goals are set annually and are designed to help the district continue to build momentum in enhancing student learning, strengthening teaching, engaging parents as partners, operating more efficiently, and doing more with less.

The Board of Education invites community input throughout the budget process.
