Courtesy of Kings manager Bob Turiani, local residents will be selling “PickALS” at Kings Supermarket in Maplewood Village on Saturday, Nov. 28, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The pickles are the product of local resident Arthur Cohen, who has been battling ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease, since 2013. Cohen grows the Kirby cucumbers at his Maplewood home with wife Janet, then jars and pickles them for sale. Proceeds go to ALS research.

Once the couple came up with the idea to launch a cucumber crusade, Janet, an advertising copywriter, designed the clever name, while neighbor Mark Holechek dreamt up the original logo for the company. As of an April 2015 Village Green profile of Cohen, PickALS had raised more than $10,000 for the Greater New York Chapter of the ALS Association as well as additional funds for the national chapter as well as ProjectALS.
