Maplewood’s 235-Unit Avalon Bay Project Is Rising Fast

They’ve topped out at the 235-unit housing development at Springfield Avenue and Boyden Avenue in Maplewood.

Passersby can see men working on the roof today, tethered tightly and enjoying the bright sunshine — if not the windy conditions. The development sits in an area of Springfield Avenue that is seeing a lot of investment: today, workers are toiling outside the Daibes project, while others are clearing the Wawa site, some are at the “coming-soon” farm-to-table restaurant Cornbread, and still more are finalizing improvements to the Maplewood Diner.

Maplewood Urban Renewal LLC — an entity formed by Avalon Bay — has been moving steadily on construction of the 235-unit apartment complex at the former PSE&G site.

After Maplewood firefighters used the site for training, demolition began late last summer (see photos here) and continued through October. Construction crews were able to work through the mild winter to dig foundations and create footings for the project. On Tuesday, March 15, cranes were on site lifting precast concrete slabs into place to form the parking garage.
