Starting June 16, the South Orange Parking Authority will begin a six-month valet parking pilot program in South Orange Village Center to help ease the parking and traffic crunch for those coming to town to dine, shop and enjoy the arts on evening weekends.
Starting Friday, June 16, AEValet will park cars from the dropoff in the Firehouse Lot (3) off of First Street near the Zip Cars and Scooter Shelter. Thereafter, the pilot valet service will run Thursdays through Sundays, 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Vehicles will be parked in the Third Street garage. The fee will be $8 per car.
The service is a “Town Valet service” and is open to anyone regardless of their destination, said South Orange Trustee Walter Clarke. The valet service will use SMS Valet technology to accept credit card payments. The system will offer customers a survey option for complaints or complements and generate audit reports.
Mark Hartwyk, the Executive Director of the South Orange Parking Authority, said that SOPA is not subsidizing the program; the parking authority has charged the operator a licensing fee.
“If successful, SOPA will see if businesses wish to partner with the valet to pay for patrons through a mobile app loyalty program,” said Hartwyk.
“Drive in and drop off! said Clarke. “I am excited because this offers yet another option for visitors and residents to come downtown to shop, eat, linger, and appreciate the live music capital of North Jersey!”
