Conversations on Gender with Dr. Eunice Aviles
Part II: Gender Identity and the School System: Where Does My Child Fit In?
Wednesday, November 7, 2018 7:00-8:30pm at Main Library Ages 14+
With guest speaker Dr. Melinda Mangin, Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University
With the social, legal, and healthcare related changes that have taken place in recent years, the transgender & gender non-binary community has experienced an increase in visibility. Increased use of social media has also allowed our children and adolescents to freely express and claim their right to be themselves. During this conversation, we will explore the feelings & experiences of parents & caretakers, and the legal protections in place for transgender students in New Jersey and how to address your child’s needs with the school system.
Target audience: Parents, caretakers, family friends, teachers, & anyone that works with children & adolescents, including those within the Dept of Children & Families.
Dr Avilés, PsyD, LMHC, LPC is a Doctor of Clinical Psychology, a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Gender Specialist and an AASECT certified Sex Therapist. She provides psychological care and professional training, and regularly speaks on gender identity, gender dysphoria, and related topics.
