Jazz On Sloan Presents Consequence f Joel Cotton in Downtown After Sundown. South Orange Village Center Alliance invites you to dine, dance or listen under the stars as we present Downtown After Sundown in the Live Music Capital of North Jersey.
Joel Cotton is a young rising artist known for his powerful sound and captivating melodies. He is from Utah and moved with his wife 5 years ago to the east coast. In 2012 he studied at the Jackie McLean School in Hartford Connecticut with Abraham Burton, Eric McPherson, Steve Davis, Nat Reeves, and Rene McLean.

In 2014 he studied at William Paterson under the tutelage of the great Harold Mabern who he has had multiple opportunities to perform with including, Dizzy’s Coca-Cola, Smalls, Fatcat and Lindas. In 2016 Joel graduated with his Masters degree and since that time he has been performing with the likes The Duane Eubank’s quintet, Black Lion led by Dezron Douglas, and the Harold Mabern Trio. Joel also has been leading his own trio for the past 5 years.

The band “Consequence” has been in the making for the past five years. It usually consists of Joel on saxophone and drums and bass. Joel considers this one of his favorite settings to play music because of the space that it allows.

The name Consequence comes from a personal connection Joel has with people. He believes that all of the interactions and relationships we have with people directly influence who we become. “I have had many great people help shape who I am today,” says Joel, “and I feel the need to give back; specifically to my Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, as well as my wife and son, family, friends, mentors, and the great people in the West Indies that I loved and lived with.

My life is a direct consequence of my relationship with these people. I feel a great need to show my gratitude.” Joel dedicates his music to all of the people that have helped him grow as a musician and more importantly, as a person.

Join us under the Gazebo on Fridays for Jazz on Sloan and in Spiotta Park on Saturdays where every style of music from acoustic to zydeco, jazz to flamenco will be represented. Concerts kick off Memorial weekend through Labor Day, every Friday and Saturday evening from 7:00pm to 10pm.
