Dickens Village returned to Maplewood today!

This annual event is a magical way to celebrate the holiday season while taking in Maplewood Village’s historic charm. Girl Scouts were there to share information about the tiny houses, each one complete with fireplaces, stockings, antique toys and other delightful period details. Each tiny house revealed little surprises, adding to the festive atmosphere, making seasonal traditions, holiday shopping, and community cheer feel even more magical. DJ Jimmy’s festive playlist set the joyful atmosphere for the afternoon.

The highlight of the day was Santa’s arrival on a fire truck, greeted by lines of eager children excited to deliver their Christmas lists in anticipation of Christmas morning. It was a picture perfect moment of small-town magic.

Maplewood Dickens Village is a festive gift from the business community to the local residents and visitors. Horse-drawn carriage rides, carolers, concerts, refreshments, children’s activities, special shopping nights provide those heartwarming moments that have drawn many visitors to make Maplewood their home. The event runs three Saturdays: December 6, 13 and 20 

The schedule of Dickens Village events is as follows:

Saturday, December 6
1 p.m. Santa & Mrs. Claus arrive by Maplewood Fire Department escort
1-4 p.m. Dickens Village houses open for viewing
1-3 p.m. Visit with Santa
3-4 p.m. Story hour readings with Township Committeewoman India Larrier
4-5 p.m. Tree Lighting

Saturday, December 13
9:30 a.m. Breakfast with Santa at St. James’s Gate and the Village Trattoria
1-4 p.m. Dickens Village houses open for viewing
1-4 p.m. Visit with Santa
1:30-3:30 p.m. Jack’s Petting Zoo
1:30-4 p.m. Horse & Wagon rides through the village
2-2:45 p.m. Holiday reading for children at Words Bookstore
All day — Strollers caroling throughout the village

Saturday, December 20
1-4 p.m. Dickens Village houses open for viewing
1-4 p.m. Visit with Santa
1:30-3:30 p.m. Jack’s Petting Zoo

Menorah Lighting, Monday, December 22
Menorah lighting celebrating Hanukkah will be held at 6:15 p.m. at the menorah in Ricalton Square.

Dickens Tree Lighting

For many in Maplewood, the Holiday season hasn’t officially begun until Dickens Village throws open its tiny doors — and the town tree is lighted on Ricalton Square. This year, the season begins this Saturday, December 6.

The tree lighting will get special attention this year with some added features. Tree lighting festivities begin at dusk — 4 p.m.

First — and perhaps most importantly given the chilly weather — Maplewood Deli & Grille will be serving hot chocolate.

At 4 p.m., Township Committeeman Jerry Ryan will read Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” At 4:30 p.m., Mayor Vic DeLuca will read “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” and, at 4:45 p.m., the tree will be lit.

John James, President, Village Alliance, will serve as master of ceremonies.

All of this will follow the opening day of Dickens Village with Santa and Mrs. Clause arriving just before 1 p.m. with a special escort from the Maplewood Fire Department. Santa will then be available to hear children’s wish lists from 1 to 4 p.m. The Dickens houses will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. , and Girl Scout Troops #20713, #20385 and #20011 will act as docents.
