CHS Ultimate Frisbee, the Delaware Valley Youth Ultimate League (DEVYL), and the Columbia High School Athletics Department are excited to announce that the Boys New Jersey State Ultimate Frisbee Championship Final will be held in Maplewood at Underhill Sports Complex on Friday, May 29.

The championship brings one of the state’s premier Ultimate events back to the birthplace of the sport. Columbia High School holds a unique place in Ultimate history as the home of the students who invented Ultimate Frisbee in 1968, and the Maplewood community remains one of the region’s strongest hubs for youth Ultimate development.

Fans new to the sport — and longtime followers alike — are encouraged to attend for an exciting evening of high-level competition and community celebration. Spectators can also check out CHS Ultimate’s Guide to the Game to learn more about how Ultimate is played.

The championship comes at a moment of major momentum for CHS Ultimate programs following an exceptional weekend at the Pioneer Valley Invitational (PVI) in Northampton, Massachusetts, one of the largest youth Ultimate tournaments in the country.

The CHS Ultimate Varsity Boys team delivered a dominant performance throughout the tournament, winning the championship for the first time with a combination of relentless defense, disciplined offense, and remarkable depth across the roster. The win adds to the excitement of their appearance at the prestigious High School Nationals Invite June 12-13 in Salem, Oregon.

The Junior Varsity team’s cohesive group of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors also performed well at PVI and went 4-2 for the weekend against 5 varsity and one other JV team. The team won their pool 3-0 on Saturday, despite being ranked third in the pool, and delivered a performance filled with athleticism and spirit.

The 68s also continued their remarkable season with a breakthrough performance at PVl, turning in the strongest tournament showing in team history. The squad won the first two of three games on both Saturday and Sunday to earn a spot in the tournament finals and win the team its first-ever trophy.

Meanwhile, Sparkle Motion, CHS Ultimate’s girls team, captured the B Division Championship in their first-ever appearance at Pioneer Valley Invitational With nearly 70% of the Sparkle Motion roster made up of 8th–10th graders, Sparkle had one of the younger programs on the field, which made their win extra-impressive. Together, the performances at PVI highlight the continued growth and strength of the CHS Ultimate community as Maplewood prepares to host the state championship on one of the sport’s most historic home fields.

From the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office:

Newark, N.J – Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II and Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda announced today an arrest in connection with a fatal two-car crash that claimed the life of an elderly woman in Newark on Monday, April 27, 2026.

Aides Benites Rivera, 45, of Newark, is charged with second-degree leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

Preliminary findings indicate Rivera was driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck on Monday afternoon when it struck a parked vehicle outside the Ivy Hill Laundromat causing both cars to crash through the front of the business.

The victim, Ruth Benjamim, 81, of Newark, was seated at a table near the front of the laundromat when she was struck. She was pronounced deceased at the scene.

These allegations are merely accusations.  All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they enter a guilty plea or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The public is encouraged to report any information related to criminal activity by contacting the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Tips Line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432.  All calls will remain confidential.

Meanwhile, South Orange-Maplewood Schools Superintendent Jason Bing wrote to District parents to explain the District’s decision to shelter in place during the incident. Below is his letter:

Dear SOMSD Community,

I am writing to follow up on the shelter-in-place implemented at Clinton Elementary School and Underhill Field on Monday, April 27, due to law enforcement activity in the surrounding area.

After meeting with local authorities on Tuesday, we learned that the incident occurred near the border of Newark and Maplewood. While the response involved the Newark Police Department (NPD), and not the Maplewood Police Department (MPD), the proximity to Clinton Elementary School and Underhill Field required immediate precautionary action. Out of an abundance of caution, a shelter-in-place was implemented to ensure the safety of all students, staff, and community members present.

This was an evolving situation. At the time, teams were warming up for a lacrosse game, with families and spectators already on-site, and several additional teams were practicing at Underhill Field. Simultaneously, parents were arriving at Clinton Elementary for dismissal, with both car and bus traffic actively entering the campus. In addition, the Clinton Elementary multilingual enrichment program, the Beyond the Bell program, and the YMCA aftercare program were all in session.

During a shelter-in-place, the following procedures are followed:

  • All students and staff are brought indoors or remain inside the building.
  • Exterior doors are secured, and access in and out of the building is restricted.
  • Instruction and normal activities continue in a controlled and supervised environment.

To maintain safety, accountability, and order—particularly as parents and spectators continued to arrive—we initiated a controlled release, meaning a supervised and orderly dismissal of students directly into the custody of verified parents and guardians.

Throughout the situation, MPD remained in communication with NPD and with Mr. Paul Morgan, SOMSD Director of Community and School Safety, who was on-site. Once law enforcement confirmed there was no imminent threat to our schools, the shelter-in-place was lifted and normal operations resumed.

We are grateful for the swift coordination and response of our local police departments and the professionalism of our staff.

The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. Thank you for your continued trust and partnership.

The Underhill Athletic Complex’s hours in the fall will again curtail public use during school hours, but the South Orange-Maplewood School District is launching a “Senior Stride” program that will allow residents 65 and older to use the track during those hours.

After the District announced that the Underhill Sports Complex would be closed during school hours as of January 1, 2025, because of safety and turf concerns, several senior citizens sought to rescind that rule — saying they’ve walked or run on the track during those hours for years without trouble.

At the Board of Education meeting on Thursday, July 24, Superintendent of Schools Jason Bing announced the new program and fall hours for Underhill.

“As you know, we’ve been having some challenges at Underhill not only with turf over usage by non-community members but also some vandalism and things of that nature,” he said. “So we’re looking at better ways to accommodate school athletic programs and community use.”

In September, Underhill will be open to public on Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. It will be closed to the public from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday, the field will again be open to the public from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Senior Stride program will provide all senior residents 65 and older with an access card that will allow them into the Undehill complex between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Bing said he was excited about the program so seniors “can continue their walking programs and their physical activity and social interaction. We’ll be sending more information about that in the near future.”

Combining tradition with fresh innovation, this remarkable event united CHS Ultimate alumni, current players, and the broader Maplewood/South Orange community in a celebration of ultimate frisbee and shared values.

The day’s importance was formally acknowledged by South Orange Mayor Sheena Collum and Maplewood Mayor Nancy Adams, who proclaimed the Saturday after Thanksgiving as Ultimate Founder’s Day. Their proclamations, proudly presented alongside Maplewood Township Committee Member Deb Engel, underscored the event’s significance in fostering community pride and connection.

The Alumni Game: A Match to Remember:

The annual Alumni Game brought intense competition and camaraderie, with the current players narrowly missing victory in an electrifying 11-9 loss to the alumni. The coveted GOAT Trophy, recognizing exceptional skill, was awarded to Sparkle Motion Captain, Soph Irfani for their standout performance.

The day wasn’t just about the competition, though. The event was skillfully emceed by CHS Ultimate President Dan Cogan-Drew. Key figures from the CHS community, including Principal Frank Sanchez and Athletic Director Sjocquelin Winstead, lent their support by attending.A major highlight of the day came with an announcement from Fred Profeta, president of The Maplewood Foundation, of a generous $5,000 grant to CHS Ultimate. These funds will provide scholarships to help cover player dues, ensuring that the sport remains inclusive and accessible to all.

Gratitude and Looking Ahead:The Ultimate Founder’s Day exemplified everything that makes the Maplewood/South Orange community so special: a shared passion for sport, a commitment to inclusion, and a collective effort across generations.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of CHS Ultimate organizers, the support of volunteers, and the enthusiasm of participants, the event was nothing short of extraordinary.

Dear SOMSD staff and families,

The Underhill Sports Complex is an essential asset to our students, athletic teams, and community. The Underhill Complex underwent renovations in 2022-23, which upgraded the turf, stands, and press box to improve the viewing experiences of all event spectators. It is a wonderful example of a community coming together to support our students. Our goal has always been to manage the athletic complex in a way that provides community access while maintaining a high-quality facility. With this in mind, we would like to strike a balance between usage and efficiency.  We prioritized access, health, and safety concerns in our discussions with stakeholders, including the Maplewood and South Orange mayors and police departments.

We will be launching new usage hours for Underhill Complex. We expect these new hours to increase the longevity of the turf, improve public safety, and protect our staff/students. Unfortunately, our students and staff continue to experience negative interactions with individuals who refuse to leave the field upon request when schools utilize it. These instances have occurred during and after the school day, forcing staff and Underhill security to call local police. To be clear, when students are utilizing the complex, they are given priority of use; public pick-up games (soccer, football, frisbee, etc.), private business sessions (personal training, etc.), physical activities such as walking, jogging, and running cannot simultaneously transpire.

Starting in the New Year on January 1, 2025, the following hours of operation will be in effect for the Underhill Sports Complex:

Monday-Friday*
6:00 am-8:00 am Open to public
8:00 am-3:00 pm Closed to public
3:00 pm-9:00 pm Open to public

Saturday and Sunday*
6:00 am-5:00 pm

*Please understand that athletic and/or special school events may impact these hours of usage.
We appreciate your support of the new hours and look forward to providing a great experience at Underhill Sports Complex that meets all stakeholder needs while ensuring the safety of the community, staff, and students.

After a fight broke out between Columbia High School students and Irvington students at a recent football game at Underhill Field, school administrators plan to implement certain changes that they hope will prevent other similar incidents.

The incident came to light at Thursday’s Board of Education meeting, after it was mentioned by 2nd VP Nubia DuVall Wilson in her monthly Finance, Facilities and Technology committee report.

CHS Principal Frank Sanchez sent the following letter to students on September 18 after the incident:

Dear Students

 

I want to thank you for your behavior these past two football games. As I mentioned earlier in the year, we were going to return with evening games this year as long as students demonstrated appropriate behavior.

So far, you have modeled great behavior and I look forward for that to continue at our next few games.

 

On Thursday though, we had a major issue. We looked at the security video and it is clear that after the game several students from Irvington came to the CHS side and started a fight with some of our current and former students. Although the fight was short, some students got hurt when others started to run.

 

Your safety is my primary concern. That is why Mr. Porfido and I have spoken with our counterparts in Irvington to make sure this does not happen again, especially since there was an issue last year at the basketball game. We will be moving the CHS-Irvington basketball game to different times and we may have to do the same with football games moving forward if this rivalry continues to be tense.

 

Moving forward, CHS students with IDs will pay $3 for student tickets while students from outside of Columbia as well as former CHS students will be charged the adult price.

 

We want to make sure you enjoy your football evenings with friends and family and not worry about any altercations among students. Again, continue representing CHS in a positive manner.

“Police officers are present at every Columbia High School Football home game, and they were on-site during the game against Irvington. Security guards, administrators, and teachers are also present at every home game. The fight lasted for less than a minute. No students were injured during the fight. On the following Monday, one student reported that she was hurt as students ran away. The details of the injury were not reported.”

The goal this season for the Columbia High School Cougars Football Team comes down to a single word: redemption.

“I want you to call yourselves the redemption team,” said Head Coach Gary Mobley, projecting from the middle of the refurbished Lynn V. Profeta Field to the dozens of student-athletes who had just put on their gear after running sprints.

“How about this year, we try more energy?” Mobley barked as his players darted to different drill stations set up on the field. “How about this year, we try more focus?”

Mobley, who is entering his seventh year as head coach, knows it will take more than energy and focus to put the Cougars on the road to redemption from last season. Injuries and illnesses plagued the team last year. The new football field’s construction had the team playing most, if not all, of their games everywhere but their home turf at the Underhill Sports Complex. The Cougars finished the season with a 2-7 record.

But Mobley has reasons to be optimistic this year.

“This group of seniors that we got, they’re really focused. And we’re very experienced in our skilled positions,” he said referring to the quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers.

Hopes are high that the team will match or surpass its 5-5 record for the 2019 and 2021 seasons.

What will make the biggest difference this year is how the linemen perform, Mobley said.

It was merciful 72 degrees at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday as Mobley’s players lined up in squads of five. They slammed into the sled of padded dummies, digging their feet into the turf and driving their legs to push the sled back 10 yards at a time – sometimes with Mobley himself riding on the sled.

“We’re hoping these guys can grow up and give us some blocking up front,” he said. “Football games are hard to win without an offensive line being productive.”

The Columbia High School Football Cougars’ season opener will be against the Livingston Lancers at home at the Underhill Sports Complex on Thursday, August 31st, at 6:30 p.m. Ticket and game day information will be released in upcoming days.

The South Orange and Maplewood community celebrated the grand reopening of the Lynn V. Profeta Field at the Underhill Sports Complex in Maplewood on Saturday. The event was organized by CHS Cougar Boosters and Alumni in conjunction with the Columbia High School Activities & Athletics Dept.

CHS Acapella Noteworthy group performed the National Anthem to kick off the festivities. Students from Marching Band and captains from Field Hockey, Soccer, Lacrosse were part of the dedication.

To make it even sweeter, the Columbia High School Boys Varsity Lacrosse team won their home game.

The field was dedicated with remarks by former Maplewood Mayor and benefactor Fred Profeta and CHS Principal Frank Sanchez. Other dignitaries in attendance included CHS Director of Activities and Athletics Rich Porfido, South Orange Village President Sheena Collum, Maplewood Mayor Dean Dafis, South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education President Kaitlin Wittleder, BOE 1st Vice President Elissa Malespina, BOE 2nd Vice President Nubia Wilson, and BOE members Regina Eckert and Arun Vadlamani.

The ribbon was cut by Jamie Fardin who was recognized as the CHS awardee for the NJSIAA National Women in Sports Day from her varsity lacrosse and volleyball accomplishments.

The improvements were funded through the school district’s generational $160M Long Range Facilities Plan — a multi-year endeavor that is bringing additions and improvements to schools and facilities throughout the district.

SOMA to Celebrate Grand Reopening of Profeta Field at Underhill Saturday April 22

This is the re-dedication of the Lynn V. Profeta Field at the Underhill Sports Complex. The Field is the area we are standing on now. The Complex is the athletic area, including the baseball and softball fields. As many of you know, Lynn Profeta was my mother. She was a much-beloved teacher in the District for 30 years, retiring in 1981. In a bit I will tell you how this field came to be named after her.

The first dedication of this field occurred on October 25, 2008. It was Homecoming Weekend, and it was a glorious day. The football team won its game, which was not common at that time. Some said it was the turf. Who knows? But the next year the team had one of its best seasons in recent years.

But the story actually began in 2006. At that time, the field behind me was a sorry dirt patch, with little grass but lots of lumps and holes and mud. It was possible to play football on it (although not very well), but soccer and field hockey were a real challenge. It was impossible to get a true bounce off the surface. The field was an embarrassment. Visiting teams were appalled at the conditions. And it all reflected poorly on South Orange and Maplewood.

The community was very upset. The Columbia High School Alumni Association decided to take up the cause. I went before the Board of Education in 2006, made a personal financial commitment toward installation of a turf surface, and represented that the Alumni Association would undertake a fundraising effort if the BOE would commit to a renovation project. The BOE said “sure”, sounds good to us, and we will commit to $400,000. We hope you can raise the rest. Well, we knew that the total cost of the field, the stands, and the rest was north of $1,5M and we wondered if we had bitten off more than we could chew.

So here is where my mother’s reputation in the District came in. She was the daughter of immigrants who had no formal education. The family was very poor, and my mother recognized that education was her path to a brighter future. She got that education, as did my father, who was an immigrant himself. This enabled them to move to Maplewood. My mother began teaching at Maplewood Junior High School (now MMS) in l951. She taught languages, and quickly became a guidance counselor as well.

The thing about my mother was that her students loved her. During the campaign to raise money for this field in 2007 and 2008 I received many notes and letters from former students praising her. One comment that I received over and over again, in one form or another, was that “She was simply the best teacher I ever had.”

Mom had a specialty. She used to say that she was good at spotting “diamonds in the rough.” And she was. She could identify students with capacity to succeed but who were not performing up to that capacity. She would take these students aside and would challenge them. She told them that they could do much better than they had so far, and that she would prove it to them by putting them in more advanced classes. She told them that she had a dirt poor background and that education had been the key to success for her.

What my mother did for these students worked time and time again. I well remember one example involving a boy named Frank. Frank was a year younger than me. When he got to Junior High he was good at one thing – fighting. You did not want to get in a fight with Frank. If you did you were going to hurt for a long time. My mother knew that Frank was not a dumb kid. She challenged him. He took her up on it. She put him in tougher classes and this motivated him. His marks improved and he had an excellent record at CHS, where he was also a star on the football team.

Frank went on to college and medical school. He eventually became a professor at Harvard Medical School where he had an illustrious career. If Frank were here today, he would probably tell you that the path of his life might have been significantly different if it had not been for my mother.

So I knew that my mother deserved to be recognized by this District for her excellence in teaching. But I also knew that if we convinced the BOE to name this field after her that this could inspire donations from the alumni. After all, graduates living in California or Illinois might not see a reason to contribute to a football field in Maplewood, but they might be inspired to honor their former teacher.

For whatever reason, the drive to raise money from alumni and community residents was a success. The Alumni Association received over $850,000 from this effort. But we still needed $500,000 to reach the required total of $1,750,000, There was one more piece to the puzzle, and that was Seton Hall.

Seton Hall was interested in receiving permission from the District to allow its students to practice at our new facilities. But they were only offering $100,000 to pay for this privilege. Beth Daugherty was President of the BOE at the time, and I was the Mayor of Maplewood. Beth and I approached the President of Seton Hall and made a pitch for a more significant donation. We made the point that this was a good opportunity for Seton Hall to demonstrate that it could contribute to the community of which it was a part. Seton Hall ultimately donated $500,000.

That did it. We had enough to install a turf field and track, rebuild the seats and press box, put up new scoreboards, and add lighting for night events. When we dedicated the field in 2008 my mother got to be present. She was 99 at the time and in failing health, but she saw it. She died the next year at 100.

Do you know what this effort is called? You probably know. It’s called a public/private partnership. There is no technique better for getting important things done in a community. And that is because when private citizens buy into a project that succeeds, they develop pride, commitment, and the energy to improve it and replicate it. And that is what we have done here today. What’s next – Ritzer field?

The CHS motto is Excelsior. That is Latin, and it means Every Upward. Let’s commit to that motto today. Let’s keep CHS going Ever Upward for Evermore. Thank you everybody. And my mother thanks you for listening to her son.

A judge accepted a 15-year-plea deal for Yohan Hernandez in 2021 murder of Columbia High School student Moussa Fofana, in a hearing at the Essex County Courthouse in Newark on Thursday morning.

Hernandez appeared in court before Judge Ronald Wigler, according to reports. Before the plea deal was accepted, Moussa’s mother Hawa and father Yasshe begged Wigler not to accept the plea, and asked for a sentence of 30 years.

Referring to Hernandez, Hawa Fofana said, “He and his group of friends…decided to come over there and take the law into their own hands. That’s murder,” according to an ABC7 News report. 

“A family should never ever equate a number to the value of their loved one,” Wigler said.

“The judge’s comments were very disappointing,” said Fred Profeta, an attorney and former Mayor of Maplewood who has been actively advocating for a strong sentence in the case. “He made no attempt to justify the brevity of the sentence. It’s just another horrible example of how the best justice system in the world can fail people miserably and leave them in agony.”

Rich Pompelio, the family’s attorney, said Wigler’s decision was not surprising “because he followed the law and recognized the prosecutor’s discretion in the plea bargaining process. Yesterday’s proceeding, however, did accomplish several important things. Instead of this plea bargain being quietly put through the system as one more case where the victim remained voiceless, we demonstrated yesterday in open court that victims have constitutional; rights that must be respected by the courts and the prosecutors. By demanding their rights be respected, Moussa’s parents gave a face and a voice to their son in this judicial process. This young man did nothing that excused or justified the intentional taking of his life. The public saw that fact yesterday. Hopefully, this will be a lesson learned by the prosecutor’s office, and it will revise its current plea bargaining practices.”

Hawa Fofana at September 16 rally

Moussa Fofana was 18 years old when he was shot and killed at Underhill Sports Complex on June 6, 2021.

The teen’s family and friends have spoken out against the plea deal, asserting that Moussa’s parents were not informed ahead of time nor given the opportunity to provide any input.

The community held a rally last week and started a petition to protest the alleged plea deal.

Profeta, who helped raise a $50,000 reward in the case, wrote in a letter to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stevens on Wednesday that he was “astonished” by the reported plea deal. (See Profeta’s full letter to Stevens below).

Profeta said he consulted with Asst. Chief Prosecutor Tom Fennelly before and after the arrest and was assured the prosecution would “seek a just sentence.”

He wrote in the letter to Stevens: “Because of this, I was astonished to learn that your office has agreed to recommend a 15 year sentence in exchange for a guilty plea by Hernandez. I was especially astonished because of the statement which Hernandez gave to law enforcement, admitting to the intentional murder of Moussa, amounting, in effect, to a confession.”

Profeta continued: “…your office raised the fact that Hernandez would be attempting to raise a self-defense argument on the alleged grounds that Moussa “took a swing” at Hernandez, causing the latter to fire the lethal bullet. You know the facts of this case, and the law, as well as anyone. We both know that responding to a fist with a bullet does not constitute self-defense, as a matter of law.”

Alluding to the 2014 murder of local teen Brendon Tevlin, in which Judge Wigler gave the killer received multiple life sentences without parole, Profeta urged Stevens to reconsider the 15-year-plea in the murder, “…which has brought such anguish to the towns of Maplewood and South Orange. And, of course, this anguish cannot compare to that experienced by Moussa’s mother, Hawa Fofana, and his entire family. Hawa’s grief is only magnified by this prosecutorial failure, made worse by the fact that she was never consulted by your office before you arrived at a deal with Hernandez, even though she has been represented by [an] attorney throughout.”

Dear Chief Prosecutor Stephens:

 

I am a former Mayor of Maplewood. I am a litigating attorney licensed to practice in New York. You may know of me by reason of my involvement in establishing a $50,000 reward fund for information leading to the arrest of Moussa Fofana’s killer. Moussa was a talented and popular student at Columbia High School, and a leader in his sport of soccer.

 

I write this email letter to protest the 15 year proposed sentence for Yohan Hernandez, who has admitted that he intentionally shot and killed Moussa Fofana. The penalty for this senseless crime carries a sentence of 30 years to life in prison, and we discern no legitimate reason why the penalty should not fall within these parameters.

 

I consulted Assistant Chief Prosecutor Tom Fennelly both before and after the arrest of Hernandez to obtain information about the case. Mr. Fennelly knew of my high degree of interest because of the reward effort. He was always extremely courteous and helpful to me. He informed me that the prosecutor assigned to this case is Jacqueline Balinkas, whom he described as a “bulldog” and someone who was certain to seek a just sentence for the killer. Because of this, I was astonished to learn that your office has agreed to recommend a 15 year sentence in exchange for a guilty plea by Hernandez. I was especially astonished because of the statement which Hernandez gave to law enforcement, admitting to the intentional murder of Moussa, amounting, in effect, to a confession.

 

Richard Pompelio, the victims’ rights attorney representing Moussa’s mother, Hawa Fofana, has attended two meetings with prosecutors Balinkas and Fennelly and others to discuss your proposed plea deal. You attended the first meeting. I understand that your office first attempted to justify the proposed sentence on the grounds that “juries are unpredictable.” True enough, but suffice it to say that any tough prosecutor, armed with Hernandez’s confession of intentional murder, should be unafraid to put that assessment to the test.

 

Next, your office raised the fact that Hernandez would be attempting to raise a self-defense argument on the alleged grounds that Moussa “took a swing” at Hernandez, causing the latter to fire the lethal bullet. You know the facts of this case, and the law, as well as anyone. We both know that responding to a fist with a bullet does not constitute self-defense, as a matter of law.

 

The community of Maplewood and South Orange is outraged by the 15 year proposed sentence. I am sure that you have seen the press coverage in the Star Ledger and other media sources. Our protest at Maplewood Town Hall was well covered by the New York television networks. We have circulated a “Justice for Moussa” petition, beginning on September 13, and that petition has already garnered 1,361 signatures as of this writing. You can view the petition on my Facebook page, and a printed copy of the signatures up to two days ago is attached.

 

This case is assigned to Judge Ronald Wigler. You no doubt remember the case arising out of the killing of Brendan Tevlin in 2016. That case was also assigned to Judge Wigler. Tevlin was shot on Northfield Avenue in West Orange, by a stranger. As in this case, Tevlin’s killing was a senseless act of intentional murder. And like Hernandez, Tevlin’s killer confessed to the crime. But unlike the instant case, that killer received multiple sentences of life without parole. He was described by Judge Wigler as a “monster” and an “animal”, deserving to die in prison. How can you or any other competent attorney distinguish these two cases to the extent of justifying the disparity in the sentences which would occur if your recommendation is accepted?

I urge you to reconsider your intended recommendation of only 15 years for Moussa”s horrific murder, which has brought such anguish to the towns of Maplewood and South Orange. And, of course, this anguish cannot compare to that experienced by Moussa’s mother, Hawa Fofana, and his entire family. Hawa grief is only magnified by this prosecutorial failure, made worse by the fact that she was never consulted by your office before you arrived at a deal with Hernandez, even though she has been represented by attorney Pompelio throughout.

 

Thank you for your consideration of this request. The citizens of Maplewood and South Orange trust that your good judgment will prevail in this matter.

Columbia Cougars Football Team submitted this story, detailing a win over Barringer on September 24, shortly before their loss to West Orange (42-7) at home at Underhill on October1. The Cougars are now 3-2.

The Barringer Blue Bears kicked off to the Columbia Cougars on September 24 to initiate the contest held at Newark Schools Stadium. Coming off a tough loss the previous week to East Orange, the Cougars came out roaring. The Cougars’ first possession included junior QB Tariq Huff hitting sophomore Max Gigante for a 12-yard reception, senior Steve Henry added an 11 yard run and Huff hit sophomore Zhamir Rowan for a big-time 50 yard touchdown reception. Sophomore Henry Aaron added the point after for an early 7-0 Cougar lead. 

Columbia picked up on defense where the offense left off, quickly forcing the Blue Bears into a fourth and 16. Punting to Columbia with 4:16 left in the first quarter, a hungry Zhamir Rowan got his hands on the ball again and returned the punt to the Barringer 46-yard line. A couple of plays later, standout tailback Steve Henry made way past the Barringer defensive line and found the end zone 35 yards later. Shortly after, the quarter ended with Columbia up 14-0. 

Barringer opened the second quarter with the ball on their own 39-yard line. Unable to find their offensive footing against an aggressive Cougar D, Barringer was forced into an apparent 4th and 30 on the heels of a big sack by David Fadael. But the officials tossed the flag and a personal foul against Columbia gave Barringer new life. On the new set of downs, Barringer fumbled in their own backfield and a frenetic pursuit of the ball ensued; Barringer recovered but found themselves in the position of 4th and 32. 

Receiving the Barringer punt, the Cougars took over on their own 14 with 2:08 left in the second quarter. After a couple of first downs, CHS was facing a fourth and 1 on their own 39 yard line. Coach Gary Mobley gave the go ahead and Steve Henry went to work — picking up 6 yards and securing the new set of downs. Shortly thereafter, wideout Dylan Carthens picked up another first down with a nice 17-yard reception. 

Late in the second quarter, the sticks showed a third and long for the Cougars. Huff scrambled for a first down to the Barringer 20-yard line. Bearing down on the goal line, Huff hit Steve Memo in the end zone just before the half, bringing the score to 21-0 going into the locker room. 

The third quarter began with Aaron kicking the ball deep into Bear territory and the kickoff squad only allowing for a 11-yard return out to the 20-yard line. The Columbia D quickly forced a punt on 4th and 6 from the Barringer 24 yard line. Fielding the punt, Rowan returned the ball to the CHS 42. On the heels of Henry ripping off a 20 yard gain, junior Akbar Holiday and sophomore Yassan “Pop” Fields got into the act, each gobbling up solid yards and giving Columbia a first down on the Barringer 8-yard line. The Blue Bears were rallying on defense with their backs against a wall and forced the Cougars into a 4th down and 6. But they couldn’t hold up on that final down when Huff connected with sophomore Steve Memo in the end zone for 6 points; bringing the score to 28-0 with 3:45 left in the third quarter.

CHS quickly got the ball back and took over near midfield. With fifteen seconds left on their own 45 yard line, sophomore Max Gigante went in motion, Huff faked a handoff that left the defense frozen and flat-footed — turning upfield with his experienced offensive lineman out in front, leaving the Bears watching as he sped 55 yards into the end zone, making the score 35-0. 

The Cougars didn’t find their way into the end zone in the fourth quarter. In an attempt to get on the board with 1:55 left in the game, Barringer attempted a FG from the Columbia 19 yard line. A bad snap foiled their bid for three points and the game wound down. 

Unfortunately for sophomore Henry Aaron, that meant he didn’t have the chance to kick a 6th and possible school record-breaking extra point. It’s fortunate, though, for his older brother and Class of ‘21 CHS grad Nick, with whom he now shares the record for 5 in one game. 

The Cougars improved to 3-1 and face a quality West Orange squad at Underhill Field at 7pm on Friday, 10/1. Fans are welcome!

As family and friends struggle with the lack of public information surrounding the murder of Maplewood teenager Moussa Fofana, authorities and community members are making a renewed push to find who is responsible for shooting the Columbia High School student at a sports facility on June 6.

“I believe in my heart that someone saw something,” Moussa’s mother, Hawa Fofana, told Village Green on Wednesday. “I hope someone can step up and do the right thing, so [the perpetrator] can’t do it again. That would make me happy and I can go to sleep at night.”

Former Maplewood Mayor Fred Profeta, who has led efforts to raise money for the “Justice for Moussa Reward Fund,” and previously donated $10,000 announced Wednesday he was contributing another $10,000, bringing the reward total to $50,000.

“The most important thing is justice for Moussa Fofana,” Profeta said in news release from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. “We want to see the person or persons responsible for his murder apprehended.”

Essex County Chief Asst. Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly told Village Green on Wednesday that the investigation is continuing and ongoing. “No resources are being spared.” Along with the increased reward, Essex County and Profeta have released a flyer they plan to distribute throughout Maplewood, South Orange, and neighboring towns.

Maplewood Police Chief Jim DeVaul said last week that the case has not “gone cold” and remains a top priority. “We all want justice for Moussa and his family,” said DeVaul, “We need to get this right. The victims and family members deserve nothing less.”

“I just want justice for my son,” said Hawa Fofana, who called Moussa “a sweet boy” who was respectful and kind to everyone. “For this to happen to me, it can happen to anybody. It can be somebody else’s child tomorrow.”

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II, announced today that Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura’s Crime Stoppers Program is now offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the death of Moussa Fofana, an 18-year-old Maplewood soccer standout who was shot at the Underhill Sports Complex.

Former Maplewood Mayor Fred Profeta has written a personal check for $10,000 and he has spearheaded efforts in the community to raise more funds for the reward.

“The most important thing is justice for Moussa Fofana. We want to see the person or persons responsible for his murder apprehended,” said former Mayor Profeta.

At approximately 9:38 pm on Sunday, June 6, Maplewood police officers were dispatched to the area of Underhill Field on Garfield Place on reports of a shooting. Arriving officers located Fofana suffering from a gunshot wound. Fofana was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:24 pm. A second male victim was treated at an area hospital for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

The investigation, which is active and ongoing, is being handled by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force and the Maplewood Police Department.

Hello South Orange and Maplewood Community,

The purpose of this communique is to inform you that after many conversations and assessments of the current security infrastructure at the Underhill facility with our Township Officials, Police Chief DeVaul, Board President Joshua and Principal Sanchez, we are moving forward with security upgrades for the facility.

As is the case with security updates, we cannot be specific about the steps that we are taking as they could potentially make us vulnerable. To allow for the completion of this project we will only authorize the use of Underhill for our student-athletes while under the supervision of our Coaches; these scheduled student sporting activities will occur beginning on July 12th. Members of the public will not be allowed to utilize Underhill until the upgrade project is completed.

When our student-athletes are not using Underhill, it will remain secured. We do understand the inconvenience this may cause for some community members who regularly use our track or field for recreational purposes, but we believe this is a necessary step as we move forward with the project.

We again thank Maplewood Mayor McGehee and South Orange Village President, Sheena Collum as well as all who have supported us as thought partners as we have worked to strategically move forward in the best interest of our students, District and community.

Last night at 6 pm the Boys’ Soccer team held an intimate remembrance outside of Underhill Stadium where they honored their fallen teammate, and our friend, Moussa Fofana.

Flanked by their coaches, the CHS Girls’ Soccer team, and several representatives from the West Orange Boys’ Soccer team, the players led a moment of silence and then took turns sharing stories about Moussa. It was especially moving since Moussa’s mother was there in attendance.

We will now hold a more public vigil for all students on Saturday evening behind the school on Ritzer Field where Moussa played most of his home games as a Cougar soccer team player. We plan to begin promptly at 7:30 pm and Ms. Fofana will be there in attendance again to lead us in our remembrance of Moussa.

We will also be collecting all of the thoughtful messages and mementos of the student-created memorial at Underhill on Saturday so we can give them to Moussa’s mother at the vigil.

Please remember that we have additional counselors in the building for the rest of the year, and if you need to speak with someone, please reach out to a school official. Please remember to reach out to your friends to show your love and support, but also make sure you find someone to lean on.

Friends of Moussa Fofana, the Columbia High School student who was killed on Sunday, are hosting a candlelight service to celebrate his life, on Saturday, June 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Ritzer Field at Columbia High School.

Police are still investigating the shooting death of Columbia High School student Moussa Fofana, who was gunned down on Sunday night at Underhill Field while walking with a friend, but so far there have been no arrests.

“We are still interviewing numerous witnesses and this is an extremely active investigation,” said Chief Asst. Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office on Wednesday afternoon. Witnesses include people who were at or near Underhill that night, as well as people the authorities came upon after the shooting.

The 17-year-old CHS student who was with Fofana and who was shot in the leg has since been released from the hospital. Fennelly wouldn’t comment on what information the boy was able to provide to police.

Meanwhile, authorities were meeting on Wednesday with members of the Fofana family, including Moussa’s mother, Hawa.

Speaking to Village Green by phone on Tuesday evening, Hawa Fofana said she was perplexed that there hadn’t been any arrests made yet. “I don’t understand, it’s been how many days now?” she asked.

Fofana said “I really don’t know anything” about why her son had been killed after leaving his house at around 7:30 p.m. to spend time with his close friend on Sunday night. “Was it an argument? I don’t know.”

Moussa was “very happy all the time, very respectful,” said his mother. “I’m confused; he was not a troublemaker.”

Officers responded to Underhill on Sunday shortly after 9:30 p.m., after receiving reports from neighbors of gunfire in the area, and found Fofana with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at 10:24 p.m.

Fennelly said detectives were canvassing any video cameras in the area for footage that might show activity that night. “Detectives are out there,” he said.

Referring to the Instagram and other social media posts with people claiming responsibility for or involvement in the homicide, Fennelly would only say on Tuesday that “all leads are being fully examined and explored.”

Asked about a reward, Fennelly said that detectives needed to first vet all available information about the investigation. “A reward is not yet being issued, but it’s being considered.”

Hawa Fofana said on Tuesday that the authorities had not yet released the body, and that as a Muslim, she wanted to bury her son soon.

Fofana, who immigrated to the US from Liberia in 2002 and raised Moussa and a younger son as a single mother, said her elder son was always smiling and lighthearted.

“The only things he took seriously were school and soccer,” she said. Moussa’s dream was to be a professional soccer player.

A GoFundMe account set up to assist the Fofana family had raised more than $106,000 by Wednesday afternoon.

A GoFundMe account set up to assist the family of 18-year-old Moussa Fofana, the Columbia High School student who was killed in Maplewood on Sunday, has already raised nearly $80,000.

Fofana was a Columbia High School junior, member of the soccer team and former Maplewood Middle School student.

Fofana’s soccer teammate Frederik Hoffmann and CHS teacher Katie Simpson are coordinating the fundraiser for Fofana’s family “so that they can recover from their tragic loss and cover funeral expenses or any other burdens that came with this tragedy.”

“I just remember Moussa as being of one of the kindest and purest people I’ve ever met,” Hoffmann told Village Green. “No matter what he always had a smile on his face and would a soccer ball at his feet. He made everyone around him laugh and would talk about wanting to be a professional soccer player. The community is still grieving and trying to understand why someone would do this. I just wanted to support the family anyway I could and never expected to receive this amount of love from the community. It is truly overwhelming and has truly shown what our community can do when we come together. Please respect the privacy of the families affected in this tragedy.”

Dear South Orange & Maplewood School Community,

It is with a very heavy heart that we confirm there was a shooting last night with multiple victims at Underhill. One person was killed and at least one other was wounded. Tragically, the police have verified that both victims were Columbia High School students.

This inconceivable calamity is undoubtedly a devastating blow to our students, staff and community. I have been in direct contact with Police Chief Duval [sic], Mayor McGehee, Principal Sanchez, [MMS] Principal Gronau and [Clinton] Principal Connors. We have activated our emergency protocols to provide mental health support for Columbia High School, Maplewood Middle and Clinton Elementary.

We are in close communication with the authorities. The District will provide updated information to staff and the District families as it is received.  Until such time as information is received, we are making preparations for addressing the needs of our students, staff and families. I have notified our County Executive Superintendent of Schools and we are activating the County Grief Counseling Services via the Traumatic Loss Coalition, to support our students and staff..

With this devastating news, I have confirmed with our Board of Education that the retiree celebration scheduled for this evening will be canceled and postponed to a later date. Also, all activities at Underhill field are canceled while the investigation proceeds.  In addition,  due to the proximity of Underhill  to Clinton Elementary School and the ongoing police investigation taking place, all outdoor activities at Clinton will be canceled for the day (and/or take place indoors where necessary).

At this time, out of respect for the family and due to the ongoing nature of the police investigation, we are unable to share the names of the affected students.  We offer our sincere condolences to the family in their time of need. We will follow up with additional communication as we receive clearance from the local law enforcement and the family.

This article has been updated at 10:03 a.m. with more information from CHS Principal Frank Sanchez, confirmed that the victim was an 11th grader, and that another student was injured. The story was updated at 11:20 a.m. with a message from Maplewood Middle School Principal Dara Gronau.

An 11th grade student from Columbia High School was killed during a shooting incident on Sunday night at Underhill Field in Maplewood, according to authorities.  Another CHS student was injured and hospitalized.

“There is an active homicide investigation,” said Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly on Monday morning. He confirmed there was “one male victim” but declined to give the age of the victim.  Fennelly confirmed the incident took place at Underhill Field, but that the time was unclear. He said there would be more information later Monday.

Later, Fennelly identified the student as 18-year-old CHS junior, Moussa Fofana.

“Moussa was adored and cherished at MMS,” said Maplewood Middle School teacher Suzanne Fein. “Our community is devastated to learn of this tragic loss of a beautiful soul. Nothing pleased Moussa more than human connection. A student who never went without a thank you and a kind smile, grateful for all who engaged with him. A positive light in our world has dimmed, and our hearts are forever saddened.”

Meanwhile, Columbia High School Principal Frank Sanchez sent an email earlier Monday morning to teachers confirming that “a few of our students were in a horrible situation last night at Underhill Field” and that while authorities had not yet given specifics, “it looks like a student may have died.”

Sanchez later sent an email to CHS parents confirming that the deceased student was an 11th grader, and that another student was hospitalized. Maplewood Middle School Principal Dara Gronau also sent a letter out to the MMS community late Monday morning, confirming that both the deceased victim and the injured victim were MMS alumni and offering counseling and support to students.

SOMSD Supt. Dr. Ronald Taylor later sent a letter to the community, calling the incident a “devastating blow” and noting that the BOE retirement ceremony scheduled for Monday night would be canceled, and that all activities at Underhill Field and outdoor activities at Clinton would be canceled for the day:

According to RLS Media, residents on Burr Road heard gunfire around 10 p.m., and called police. This has not been confirmed by authorities.
