The following is from South Orange-Maplewood Board of Education candidate Felisha George:
“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” – Audre Lorde
I’d like to publicly announce that I will not be running for school board any longer due to my health. After last year’s election, I was diagnosed with borderline glaucoma and it is now strongly impacting my vision and day-to-day process. My body is demanding me to relax, take time for myself and tend to my eyes so that I never lose sight of the beautiful vision that has started this journey I am on.
With all the work our district needs, it is too much for me to take on at the moment. When I look at our brilliant, talented, over-achieving students, I believe they need someone who is mentally and physically up for the task to make this district everything that they deserve. For the candidates who are still running, please understand that what they need is simple. They need safe spaces, healthier lunch, they need to learn the importance of self care, they need advocates, they need better curriculums and safer buildings. They deserve administration that listens, they deserve more places dedicated to extra help academically and mentally. Most importantly they NEED TO BE APART OF THE PROCESS! How can we make decisions for people if they aren’t the main factor of the decision-making process? They need to be in those rooms. We need to be collecting actual data FROM students and stop assuming that we always know what is best for them, when we can just ask them.
I want to thank everyone who’s supported me along the way and please know that this is not the end. I will be at debates listening, I will still be in the classrooms supporting and speaking with students. I will be very active throughout the campaign. I wish you all the best of luck and I hope you are willing to make the district as amazing as these students are.
To all the students who support me, THANK YOU! Never be afraid to take time for yourself. Listen to your bodies and be honest about what you can take on. Live in love and light and your path will always be exactly what it is supposed to be. Find time to breathe, meditate and soul search. We are very powerful beings and it only gets better when we learn who we truly are. I am here to support you in everything you do and I’m so glad to watch you all mature and grow as the school year continues. I will always be here to LISTEN. UNITE. VOCALIZE. ITS ALL L.U.V!!!! ALWAYS, ALL WAYS!
