The following is a letter to the South Orange-Maplewood community from Tom Kerns, founder of the HK Community Fund.

Dear Friends,

Most of you know of my commitment to our community and when we, sadly, had to close down the HK Project back in 2014 I still looked for ways to affect positive change in Maplewood/South Orange.

The most effective way has been partnering with our local YMCA. The South Mountain Y has many programs and efforts that are community based.  Some of these programs are locally based (such as the after school programs, camps, sports programs etc) and some programs are general Y programs (funded by Y-USA) to which our branch has access.

One of these programs is “Togetherhood.” It is a community based program where the Y works closely with other organizations and “non-Y” volunteers to serve our community.  Here is a brief summary of the South Mountain Y’s Togetherhood efforts.

What is Togetherhood?

Togetherhood is a Y-USA founded program that supports and encourages social responsibility and volunteerism by creating projects that will benefit the community and not the YMCA. www.ymca.net/togetherhood is the link to the Y-USA Togetherhood page.  Projects chosen serve needs in our community and engage Y families and other volunteers to make them happen. The South Mountain Togetherhood Committee has partnered with the school district and other non-profit organizations in the community to provide enriching opportunities, funds, and support to many worthy causes. Please join the Y in this effort as they go beyond the YMCA walls and impact the great community we are a part of.

On Tuesday, 9/20/16 at 7:30 p.m., the South Mountain YMCA will be having their 2016-2017 opening Togetherhood Community Service Team meeting at the Maplewood Civic House, 124 Dunnell Road, Maplewood, NJ. The purpose of this meeting is to briefly recap 2015-2016 projects and to propose potential 2016-2017 projects.

The projects proposed at this meeting, along with any additional ideas, will be those from which we choose the 2016-2017 Togetherhood community projects. Please plan to bring a friend to this meeting so that we may expand the Togetherhood Community Service Committee.

RSVP  to Jeff Goldsmith at JGoldsmith@hkmpp.com.

If you (or someone you know) have a desire to volunteer to help our community, or if you have an idea for a program or project that will be beneficial, please consider attending this meeting.

Thanks all,

Best,

Tom Kerns
