In a once-a-century opportunity to celebrate the number Pi, students in Millburn and South Orange-Maplewood found varying ways to delve into Pi this past Friday.
Pi is that most infamous of infinite numbers — 3.1415…. — the numerical value of the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.
This year’s Pi Day — 3/14/15 — represents a once-in-a-lifetime event. It’s the only time this century when the day, date and year synchronize with the first five digits of Pi.
Fifth graders at Glenwood Elementary School in Millburn participated in the school’s annual Pi Day celebration with costumes — Pi-rates, Pi(e) Chefs, Octo-Pi and of course Albert Einstein, whose birthday is March 14. They performed Pi skits and of course they enjoyed many kinds of pie.
At Seth Boyden School in Maplewood, fifth graders (who hail from throughout the South Orange-Maplewood School District) participated in a Pi memorization content. First, each classroom held a contest to see who could recite the most digits correctly. Then each classroom champion went onto a fifth grade-wide competition. Nathan Pearlman was the winner, reciting six lines of Pi from the study sheet (see picture below) — or nearly 300 digits!
