Wednesday marks the “opening season” for the South Orange Farmers Market. The market, in the Sloan Street parking lot adjacent to the train station, runs every Wednesday through October. This year, hours are extended for the commuter crowd: the market will run from 2 to 7:30 p.m.
Tomorrow only, the South Orange Village Center Alliance (SOVCA) is offering $5 off to the first 200 customers who pick up a special coupon at SOVCA’s table.
As if that weren’t enough of a draw, Sheena Collum — in her first “ceremonial act” as Village President — will take the first bite of the farmers market at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Video will be taken, said Bob Zuckerman, executive director of SOVCA.
Joining repeat vendors including Stony Hill Farms, Alstede Farms, and Hoboken Farms are some new names: Dining Wild, a local business offering fresh wild mushrooms and organic cultivated mushrooms; The Pie Store from Montclair, Jersey City Veggie Burgers and Glenmalure Farms from Sussex County.
For at least the first couple of weeks, look for Nicola’s Pasta Fresca featuring fresh, handmade pasta from a chef who studied at Italian Culinary Academy in Parma, Italy.
