When the Elks Lodge in South Orange hosts its annual Elktoberfest on Saturday, October 3, there will be something special added to the celebration: the unveiling of a brand-new mural by nationally recognized artist DISTORT..
This mural shows imagery of an elk near the South Orange train station, with greenery surrounding it. According to Cevil Joyce of the South Orange Elks, the artwork represents the Elks’ connection to the greater South Orange-Maplewood community.
“Elks are herd animals, representing social connection, mutual support, and protection — values that reflect who we are and what we strive to bring to South Orange every day,” Joyce said.
The Elks have long been involved in a variety of community service projects, including furnishing apartments for veterans, supporting food pantries through the Rent Party Garden, and donating to Columbia High School college scholarships and Girls Helping Girls Period.
Working with mural artist DISTORT – a South Orange native – was another important part of the mural project. (Another DISTORT mural is on Valley Street in South Orange.)
“His raw, energetic street-art style captures the spirit of a Lodge that continues to grow, adapt, and evolve as we serve our community,” Joyce said.

The Elks decided to unveil the mural at Elktoberfest because it is the Elks’ largest community event, which Joyce said makes it a great opportunity for residents to see the new artwork in person while also learning more about the organization.
“So many people from our community come through our doors without ever having heard of the Elks or truly understanding what we’re about,” Joyce said.
The event is open to the public. Families can enjoy a bounce house, coloring contest, games, and a craft table, while adults can participate in a stein-holding competition, axe throwing, and the Smash Tent, along with live music for all to enjoy.
“Bring the whole family and enjoy a fun-packed day,” Joyce said. “Whether you’re coming with the family or looking for a great day out with friends, Elktoberfest is the place to be!”
Elktoberfest will take place Saturday, October 3, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the South Orange Elks Lodge, located at 220 Prospect Street. Admission is $20 for adults, while children under 12 can attend for free. The event is open to all, rain or shine.
