On Wednesday, Dec. 2, members of the newly minted Maplewood Middle School Spanish Junior Honor Society participated in “Teens Read to Kids in Spanish” at Maplewood Memorial Library.
The MMS Spanish Junior Honor Society is a YouthNet Club run by Señor Paul Roncagliolo and Señora Laurence Seltzer, Spanish teachers at MMS. Señora Seltzer called the event a “showcase” of “one of the many nice things Maplewood Middle School students have been doing.”
The goal of Teens Read to Kids in Spanish, said Seltzer, is to “expose the children in attendance to books in Spanish in a way that was both interactive and playful to foster interest and curiosity. It allowed the Middle School students to showcase their Spanish skills while creating fun connections for the younger children.”
Diane Malloy of YouthNet said that the Spanish Honor Society is “exactly the kind of club we like to sponsor.” Malloy said that she hopes the Honor Society will gather momentum — similar to the Model UN Club at MMS — “and become an ongoing part of the fabric of the middle school experience.”
