When the Society of Musical Arts Orchestra holds its next concert on October 30 at Maplewood Middle School, there will be a familiar figure sharing the stage. Mayor Vic DeLuca will narrate Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, a key element of the program’s “To Liberty and Justice” theme. Other pieces on the program will be Sibelius’ Finlandia, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, and Dudley Buck’s Variations on the American National Air, Star Spangled Banner.
The Society of Musical Arts is presenting a free orchestral concert “To Liberty and Justice” for Maplewood and the surrounding communities as the opening concert of their 2016-2017 season. This concert will be held in the auditorium of Maplewood Middle School, 7 Burnett Street, Maplewood, on Sunday, October 30 at 4 pm. All are welcome to attend, with handicapped access available at the rear entrance of the school.
Stephen Culbertson, president of Subito Publishing in Verona, is the conductor and music director of the orchestra. He combines interesting and ambitious musical selections for each of the orchestra’s concerts. The Society’s concerts sometimes feature music of contemporary composers that Culbertson works with in his publishing business. It’s especially exciting when the composers themselves come to the orchestra rehearsals to give their comments about interpretation and talk about their inspirations for writing each piece.
The Society of Musical Arts Orchestra has called Maplewood its home for more than 30 years. The late Samuel Applebaum, violin teacher and music educator, began the orchestra with local talent around 1980. In more recent years, the orchestras has grown in membership and stretched wider, but its core membership of musicians remains Essex county and surrounding towns.
