SOMA Cross-Cultural Works, the non-profit organization behind LunarFest NJ, HolaFestNJ, and HAPIFestNJ, has once again partnered with the Township of Maplewood to host the third annual DiwaliFestNJ, a unique multicultural celebration of Diwali (Indian festival of lights) for the whole community.
Marking an important holiday in many South Asian cultures, DiwaliFestNJ will kick off at 12pm on Sunday, October 20 with performances and presentations by a variety of dance and musical groups, including Indian classical dance, Bhangra (folk dance,) vocal music, and Dhol (drumming.)
Traverse the length and breadth of South Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Experience the delicate folk dances of the remote eastern states of Mizoram and Assam to the thrilling and thumping drum beats of the western states bordering the Arabian Sea. Audiences can experience first hand the colors, vibrancy, and energetic movements from Punjab in the north to the classical, refined, and enchanting dance forms of South India.
This year our focus is on presenting a compelling mixture of sounds and movements – not only in their pure classical or folk forms but also ‘fusion’ versions showcasing how second generation Americans are imbibing the culture of their parents and making it their very own embodiment of East meets West!
Supported by volunteers from South Orange and Maplewood, DiwaliFestNJ will provide an array of children’s activities as well as food vendors and merchandise stands. DiwaliFestNJ provides an opportunity for everyone to enjoy and celebrate together as friends and neighbors and attracts visitors from across northern and central New Jersey.
