Everyone’s favorite ogre is coming to town January 23-25 when Front & Center for Performing Arts presents “Shrek the Musical” at The Woodland in Maplewood.
The cast of 50 local children includes seven from Maplewood: Milo Shields (Shrek), Cyrus Shields (Donkey), Ben Halperin (Big Bad Wold & Papa Ogre), Eileen Conway (Wendy), Rienna Destri (Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater), Eliza Fausel (Goldilocks), and Molly Hurley (Woman Who Lived in a Shoe).
“Shrek the Musical” is a Tony Award-winning musical featuring songs from Jeanine Tesori (“Thoroughly Modern Millie,” “Caroline or Change”) and book by David Lindsay-Abaire.
Just as in the popular animated film, the unlikely hero finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. There’s a short-tempered bad guy, a cookie with an attitude, and more than a dozen other fairy tale misfits.
“This is such a perfect fit for our group – it’s all about being yourself and being comfortable with who you are. That is exactly what we try to bring out in the children who come to work with us,” says Director Renee Palermo.
