From the South Orange Symphony Orchestra:

Belleville resident and cello viruoso Jameson Platte will be performing with the South Orange Symphony Orchestra’s Spring Concert this Sunday in the auditorium at South Orange Middle School at 3 pm.  Platte is featured in the rarely-performed Cello Concerto of William Walton, a haunting yet lyrical piece for full orchestra and cello solo.  Platte has performed with orchestras all along the east coast and beyond, and also conducts, and teaches, working with students of all ages, as well as coaching youth orchestras.

This free concert will conclude South Orange Symphony’s 67th season.  Also on the program is Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 “Little Russian”, and Elgar’s Pomp & Circumstance March. The Symphony presents three free classical music concerts each year, November to March.  Susan Haig of Summit, NJ, conducts the orchestra.  Maestra Haig has led professional orchestras in the midwest and south, but has returned to her roots in New Jersey and took over the South Orange Symphony two years ago when their long-time conductor and music director, Robert Helmacy, retired.

The musicians of the orchestra are local amateur and professional musicians who enjoy the challenge and rewards of playing a wide repertoire of classical music.  The orchestra rehearses weekly on Tuesday nights at South Orange Middle School; there are openings in the string and percussion sections for experienced players.  For more information about the concert, or about playing with the orchestra, please check South Orange Symphony’s Facebook page, their webpage www.sosymphony.org or call 973 376-6349
