Once again boasting a wide-ranging mix of musical styles, Maplewood’s Springfield Avenue Gazebo Concert Series returns this summer beginning on July 19 and running through August 16. All concerts are on Friday nights starting at 7:00 pm. and are free and open to the public.
For a second year in a row, the Maplewood Office of Cultural Affairs has partnered with HONK NYC to engage artists who cross genres and defy expectations. “HONK provides us with access to offbeat and lesser known performers that would otherwise not be on our radar,” said Maplewood Office of Cultural Affairs Manager Andrew Fishman. “Their eclectic sensibilities are also a good match for Maplewood and we are lucky to have them on board”.
Series kicks off on Friday, July 19 with local drummer Greg Bufford leading his band for a jazzy celebration of the music of Stevie Wonder. They’ll be followed on July 26 by the XOL AZUL BAND whose Latin infused rock recalls the sound of the legendary band Santana. Jamaica by way of the Bronx arrives on August 2, when Nando Griffiths and the Kingston 8 bring their unique mix of Afro beat, Reggae, Soul and R&B to the Gazebo.
With influences ranging from Hip Hop, Funk and Jazz to Soul, Pop and R&B, Extra Syrup Horns expands traditional notions of a brass ensemble on August 9. Closing out the series on August 16, the all-female band Dawn Drake & ZapOte who fuse worldbeat-meets-funk with everything from Afro-Cuban jazz to hip-hop and samba.
The Gazebo Concert Series has earned a reputation for showcasing a wider variety of artistic styles than any other public stage in the SOMA community, and the location next to the Hilton Branch Library brings live music closer to Maplewood residents living north and east of the Village.

JULY 19 – THE GREG BUFFORD GROUP CELEBRATES THE MUSIC OF STEVIE WONDER
Join this quintet of superb musicians as they pay tribute to music icon Wonder. Featuring vocalist Ty Stephens, Miho Nobuzane on synth, pianist Alva Nelson, Bill Dotts on bass and renowned jazz performer Greg Bufford on drums.
JULY 26 – XOL AZUL BAND
Hailing from Asbury Park, NJ, the XOL Azul Band is a fiery five piece rock band with a heavy Latin flavor. Singing in both Spanish and English, their unique sound represents the fusion of powerful musical traditions.

Fast rising Jamaican singer Nando Griffiths blends Reggae, Soul and R&B with a mash up of dancehall and Afro beat to create a style of music all his own
AUGUST 9 EXTRA SYRUP HORNS
Infusing their music with soul and hip-hop, this Brooklyn based group brings an all together different attitude to the sound of a traditional brass ensemble.
AUGUST 16 – DAWN DRAKE AND ZAPOTE
This all female band describes their sound as “mothership connection, global south, chronic groove, pan American groove, ameri-chronic Creole nation, new Americana.” Decide for yourself as they close out the Summer Concert series
