Maplewood 4th of July Community Art Project Goes 3 Dimensional

After a few years of art projects using rectangular tiles as pixels, the Maplewood 4th of July Community Art Project put some pi back into the equation and returned to circles — or hoops — this year.

Local artist John Kaufman, with support from 1978 Maplewood Arts Center, “conceived of the 2017 Maplewood 4th of July Art Project as an opportunity to collectively exercise individual expression.” (VFW Post 10120, of which Kaufman is the Quarter Master, is a co-producer of the project along with 1978 Maplewood Arts Center and the Maplewood 4th of July Committee.)

Art hoops or circles were decorated by creative participants of all ages and then were installed in a giant sphere that appears to be pushing its way through the baseball diamond backstop in Memorial Park near Oakview Road. The hoops were installed in time for the Maplewood 4th of July festivities and will remain as long as weather permits.
