As it waits for our beloved 99-year-old movie theater to be renovated and reopened – hopefully in early 2027 – the Maplewood Film Society is continuing to bring movie experiences to the community.
On August 27, they are hosting an MFS event presenting the OSCAR winning documentary, Summer of Soul, as the centerpiece of our annual summer fundraiser.
Summer of Soul, produced by David Dinerstein, captured hearts, souls and a slew of awards, including the Oscar for Best Feature Documentary, as well as a Grammy, a Peabody, and many more. It is a documentary about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, celebrating Black music, culture, and history through extraordinary performances and powerful archival footage. More than a concert film, it is a moving portrait of a pivotal moment in American history that was nearly forgotten. Dinerstein and Musa Jackson, an attendee at the concert and featured in the movie, will be on hand for a conversation and Q & A that evening.
The Maplewood Film Society was founded with a simple but important mission: to preserve the beloved historic Maplewood Theater—which has been dark since 2020—and to bring meaningful film experiences back to a wonderfully diverse, creative, and engaged community. While the theater is still being restored, the organization will be continuing to host special screenings and events at our sister theater at Box Office Cinemas at SOPAC. Keep the spirit of cinema alive in SOMA and go see Summer of Soul.
