Since Maplewood’s July 4th Celebration is always quickly followed by Maplewoodstock, this year we thought it would be great to bring some new music to Memorial Park:

  • Columbia High School’s cOlture kick things off at 5 p.m. “cOlture is a collective of all art forms for the new generation originating in South Orange and Maplewood New Jersey. The “O” in cOlture represents the strong circle of people we have and the potential we possess. The path represents our journey, and the zig-zags/dashed lines represent our potential future while still surrounded by the strong circle. Our goal is to inspire our generation to work together to show the world what we can accomplish. We are grateful to be working with a group of people who are all trying to build an empire and demonstrate not just our individual talents, but the strength of our talents being used together. The potential is endless.”
  • Rebecca Turner leads an All-Star band at 6 p.m. “Singer-songwriter and semi-rocker Rebecca Turner is a Maplewood resident and Los Angeles native. Together with Deena Shoshkes she hosts the Saturday Afternoon Song Swap at Rockn’ Joes in Millburn. “Like” Saturday Afternoon Song Swap on Facebook for more info, and talk to her if you’d like to do it!”
  • Sad About Girls take the stage at 7 p.m. Local indie rock veterans Sad About Girls play heartfelt, smart, and catchy pure power-pop music for now people. Jangly hooks, gritty guitar and real rock and roll abound.
  • The Gotham City Pickers fire up at 8 p.m. The Gotham City Pickers grew from a love for the quintessentially American music of Bill Monroe, the Stanley Brothers, the Skillet Lickers, The Blue Sky Boys and other traditional favorites. Marc Orleans and JP Gilbert forged a sound around their close range, propulsive “dance style” flat-picking and love of the form. The boys will bring along a fiddler and deliver roots music steeped in tradition and filled with newness and vitality.

DJ Jimmy fills in the gaps with an eclectic mix.
