SOPAC Announces Fall Line Up of Music, Theater, Film and More

Sept 24:  La Cinémathèque: Women Film Directors

Membership: $60 (four screenings and discussions)

La Cinémathèque Film Club presents a brand new series of film screenings this fall. “Women Film Directors” will be a chronology of pictures directed by women from around the world, produced from 1962 to the present day. The series will explore the social, economic and political aspects of each director’s home country and the cinematic language of the female filmmaker. After each screening, there will be a discussion about the different messages and viewpoints of these great directors, their impact on the world of cinema and their impact on the lives of women from various cultures. Film Club memberships are $60 and available for sale through the second screening, Post-show discussions build upon prior events.

Sept 24: Matthew Sweet

Matthew Sweet emerged in 1991 as the leading figure of the American Power Pop revival, when his album Girlfriend became a hit with its title track reaching the Top Five on the Modern Rock charts. Oct 12:  The Wailers

Bob Marley and The Wailers burst on the scene with the smash Reggae hit “One Love” in 1977. Marley’s legacy lives on as The Wailers reunite to celebrate the music that is universally acclaimed and continue to spread the messages of peace, love and unity to this day. WBGO on air personality Sheila Anderson will moderate a Q&A with Junior Marvin after the performance. Oct 13: The Hot Sardines

Oct 15: Rusted Root

It has been 25 years since their first album, Cruel Sun, and Rusted Root is still going strong. This Alternative-Indie Rock group integrates jam-heavy Rock with percussion influences based on the music of Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. Rusted Root has created their own distinct and undeniable sound.

Oct 19: Colin Hay

Oct 21: Comedian Gary Gulman

Versatile doesn’t even begin to describe Gary Gulman, whose resume is a bountiful smorgasbord of life-experiences. Gary has been a scholarship college football player, an accountant, a barista, a doorman, a waiter and a high school teacher. Now, after an impressive finalist finish two years in a row on Last Comic Standing, he is one of the most popular touring comics in the country today. Add funnyman to that list.

Oct 27: Aztec Two Step

Ranked by Comedy Central as one of the “100 Greatest Standups of All Time,” actor and comedian Sinbad has had audiences laughing for over three decades.
