Father Jim Worth, Pastor of St. Joseph’s Parish has something scary for the church’s second POPS (Performances On Prospect Street) show on Friday.

“We had such a great time at our first POPS event,” Father Jim said. “I am sure that nobody will be too afraid to show up for our ‘Spooky Musicals’ POPS concert this Friday.”

The Halloween-themed show, at 7 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Parish (767 Prospect Street, Maplewood) will feature tunes from some of Broadway’s moodiest shows —Cats, Jekyll 7 Hyde, Wicked, Les Miserables, Pippin, The Fantastiks, and Into the Woods, among them.

Father Jim will be one of the featured baritone soloists, along with “Dr. Joe,” St. Joseph’s Director of Music, Joseph Legaspi. The free concert will feature Warren Helms, pianist and arranger for The Juilliard School of Music and The Manhattan School of Music.

What, no songs from The Grateful Dead, Megadeath, The Dead Poet’s Society, Bon Jovi’s Dead or Alive, or any other scary rock bands?

“Well, you can be sure there won’t be any from Black Sabbath,” Father Jim joked. “But we might have some other surprises up our sleeves. We do have an organ that could produce some pretty scary tunes.”

Admission is free, but audience members are encouraged to donate what they can to help offset the cost for the events. A light reception downstairs in Bernards Hall will follow the performance.
