Two local lads who’ve made good and done good will be at Words Bookstore on Thursday, May 21 to discuss I Am Because You Are, the story of South Orange native Jacob Lief’s personal journey building Ubuntu Education Fund in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
According to a press release, “The book sets forth a vision for a new development model and offers a portrayal of the challenges facing nonprofit organizations as they seek rewards for the betterment of others. It’s a story that not only illuminates the meaningful work of Ubuntu, but reminds us all that sometimes taking a chance can change the course of life, not just for one person, but for thousands.” It also “challenges the philanthropic sector to rethink how to value investments in disadvantaged communities.”
Ubuntu Chief External Relations Officer Jordan Levy, a Maplewood native, will interview Lief, his lifelong friend from South Orange, about Lief’s journey and the lives he has touched along the way, from the founding of Ubuntu to its recognition as an extraordinary model for life-changing sustainable development.
