As you walk through Maplewood Village, it’s hard to miss the construction taking place at in the space that used to be Shenanigans Toys. And though you may not be able to buy toys there now, you will still be able to have fun.
South Orange residents Claudia Aarts-Schreiber and her husband Felix Aarts are working hard to open ChaiseFitness, a boutique fitness studio. Both had careers as professional ballet dancers and jumped on the opportunity to bring Chaise’s hybrid of Pilates, ballet and strength training to our area. They already own a ChaiseFitness studio in Madison and wanted to open another closer to home.
Eventually, the studio will have state of the art equipment like modernized Pilates chairs and overhead bungees. “We offer a range of classes from our signature Reinvention and Reinvention Plus [both cardio-focused classes] to BalletBungee [which uses overhead bungees to sculpt arms and core] to TRX classes [which uses suspended straps and gravity to create resistance],” said Aarts-Schreiber.
“The Reinvention method is perfect for working every part of your body. You rotate around our chair, and move to music. I think of it as a rotisserie,” Aarts-Schreiber laughed. “Our classes are great for creating long, lean, dancer muscles,” she said.
And in case you are feeling intimidated, Aarts-Schreiber says people in their classes range in age from 12 to 70. “We work with people at all different levels,” she said. “Our classes are hands-on and our instructors are attentive. We stress that this is your workout and your body. After a while, our clients feel empowered to make adjustments to work at the level that’s right for them.”
A single class is likely to cost about $28, but packages and unlimited monthly passes bring the cost down considerably. To get a sense of the classes and the costs, you can check the website at ChaiseFitness.com/NJ. Visitors will see the pricing from the Madison location until October, when the Maplewood website is scheduled to go live.
The space is undergoing major construction to create the clean, urban industrial design they like. But it should be open in early 2019 — just in time for New Year’s resolutions or maybe as a fun way to work off the holiday weight.
