Breaking news: Maplewood beat Princeton! Next round: a head-to-head bout with our “Essex County rival”: Montclair.

That was the news today in NJ Monthly’s ‘Downtown Showdown,’ an online competition presented by Kings to find the best downtown in New Jersey. Based on votes, Maplewood bested Princeton and will now advance to round three to compete against Montclair.

Morristown goes up against Cape May, and the two winners will face off in the championship round for the title of Best Downtown, to be named on Sept. 29.

“Social networking and word-of-mouth appear to be driving the voting in the winning towns,” according to the magazine, which noted that Montclair, Maplewood and Cape May each beat a town with a significantly larger population.

So, Maplewood — don’t let up now. Make sure to vote this week!

Vote now through noon, Monday, Sept. 21 by visiting this link.
