A beloved Jamaican restaurant in the Seton Village area of South Orange owned by Reid and Sophia Taylor, Munchie’s is known for its authentic food including some of the area’s best jerk chicken, oxtails and patties.

The event will feature music, food, games and lots of fun for the whole family. There will be food samples and a vendor will be selling Reggae records. The festivities will take place in the parking lot adjacent to the building, and in the pocket park across the street.

The restaurant is located at 307 Irvington Ave., South Orange, NJ.

“Reid and Sophia are examples of exactly who and what’s going to continue to catalyze Seton Village,” said chair of the Seton Hall committee Doug Zacker. “I love having them as neighbors and friends and I am looking forward to the celebration.”

Here is more information from the Taylors:

The highlight of the event, which will be from 2:00-8:00PM, is MUSIC! As much as Jamaicans travel on their stomachs, and LOVE our food, nothing is more central to Jamaican culture than music, especially the Soundsystem Dances. We are very lucky to have 4 top notch sounds playing that day– and playing STRICTLY vinyl, DEADLY DRAGON, CHANTER INTERNATIONAL, and two iconic legends– SONS JUNIOR and DOWNBEAT THE RULER! Downbeat has worldwide status, and regularly travels overseas to take part in “sound clashes” against the world’s BIGGEST names. He is one of the original sound system men to come build his set in NYC way back in the ’70s, and he cites Sons Junior as one of his original inspirations. Sons Junior is one of downtown Kingston’s very first sound systems– the musical legacy of these two sets is truly awesome!! Mixx102 DJ Extroadinaire KEVROCK will host the event, and other Mixx102 Presenters will be passing through, including yours truly, DIGGYBROWN!

Our hope is to create a Family Fun event, rich in Jamaican and West Indian culture. Tables will be set up across the street for playing Dominoes and Ludo, the Jamaican board game. Several of our vendors will be on hand giving away samples of their products, including NEW products not yet being offered to the public! A vendor will be here selling Reggae records, so you can purchase the music you hear.

As much as it is OUR anniversary, we are encouraging all the other Seton Village businesses to take advantage of the extra feet on the street, so there will be specials and surprises all up and down the block– possibly including a Fashion Show staged by our friends at the Chadomore Boutique!!!!

Five years ago when we opened the restaurant we wished and prayed our hard work would produce a milestone like this. Restaurant years are HARD years, but this day we celebrate with our FABULOUS CUSTOMERS who have made it all possible. Through all the ups and downs, the long hours, the stress and the strain, the friendships we have made, and the true sense of community that exists here make it all worth while. So, PLEASE come out and help us celebrate, and let Munchie’s show you all a GREAT time, inna true Jamaican YARDIE fashion!
