The new Starbucks in Maplewood Village opened this morning to waiting customers.
Meanwhile, business was brisk at other local coffee shops, including Able Baker where loyal customers were lined up at the counter and filling the tables inside and out.
According to Starbucks store manager Adam Gianatassio, coffee drinkers were waiting outside this morning at 5:30 a.m. when he opened the doors. He said the patrons were headed for the train into the city. Gianatassio also manages the Starbucks in South Orange and Millburn and said that he would continue to evaluate the early morning demand — potentially adjusting the opening to 5 a.m. as in South Orange.
While some vocal locals have decried the opening of Starbucks as potentially detrimental to other locally owned bakeries and coffee houses, others have noted that the chain is open earlier and will stay open later (10 p.m.), providing an option for those previously fallow coffee hours.
