Shenanigans Toys is Maplewood is saying goodbye.

Owner Erin Lundstrom announced the store’s closing on Facebook on October 5 with a note of thanks to customers (see below). Notices from the New Jersey Division of Taxation posted in the window and on the door of the shop at 178 Maplewood Avenue stated that “the property contained herein has been seized … for non-payment of New Jersey state taxes.”

Lundstrom took over the former Scriveners Toys & Collectibles in 2015 after Norman Scrivener announced his retirement; Lundstrom, a former Scriveners employee, took on the business and re-opened as Shenanigans in June 2015.

Today, Lundstrom blamed “the age where any product you can think of is available with a touch of your phone” and urged locals to support small businesses.

Earlier this year, Lundstrom launched a gofundme campaign to help satisfy two balloon payments — one to the landlord and one to the former business owner.

Today Lundstrom was effusive in her thanks to her loyal patrons: “It has been the honor of my life that you have entrusted me with your children and shared so many wonderful moments with me.”

From Erin Lundstrom via Facebook:

Dearest Maplewood,

It is with great sadness that I have played with my last toy, wrapped my last gift, told my last joke and said my final thank you.

Being a small business is hard work, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week of worry, concern, juggling and work work work to make a business thrive.

And in the age where any product you can think of is available with a touch of your phone, small businesses need all of the support you can give to them. Please shop locally. The extra trip it takes you around the parking lot means a store can last for another day and it’s employee’s will continue to have work.

I NEED to say thank you!

Thank you for sharing your wonderful children with me. Their smiles, laughter, tenacity, creativity, and everything that makes them lovable has made my dream come true even better than I could have imagined.

It has been the honor of my life that you have entrusted me with your children and shared so many wonderful moments with me.

This moment of Shenanigans has ended, but I will return in the future. All for the love of fun!!!

….see you around town
