For the second year running, South Orange is going big with Small Business Saturday.

As you know, Small Business Saturday began as the American Express promo for the day after Black Friday (which in turn is the day after Thanksgiving) to drive sales to mom-and-pop shops at the beginning of the Holiday shopping season.

Well, Small Business Saturday (November 28 this year) has taken on a life of its own. And in South Orange, it is “THE day where we celebrate our local, independent small businesses and encourage everyone to shop local,” wrote Bob Zuckerman, Executive Director of the South Orange Village Center Alliance (SOVCA).

Zuckerman recently announced that SOVCA is “bringing our great Small Business Saturday Contest back for another year!” He explained how it works:

“SOVCA will set up a table and tent on Sloan Street that Saturday to collect receipts from you – our loyal customers – that shows you are spending money here in our Village Center. For every receipt that you bring us in the amount of $25 or higher from a local South Orange business, you will receive one entry form. At the end of the day, we will select one random winner who will win $500 in gift cards from South Orange businesses!  That’s $500 to spend right here at our wonderful South Orange Village stores, restaurants and service providers.”

“Again, all you have to do is spend at least $25 at any one of our great businesses,” said Zuckerman. “But, the more places you buy from and eat at, the greater your chances will be to win the Grand Prize of $500 in gift cards from South Orange businesses! We’ll be announcing more about those gift cards before long, but in the meantime, put Saturday, November 28th on your calendars as the day to Shop Local and Win!”

Businesses in Maplewood Village will also be offering specials and sales on Saturday, September 28. Local shoppers should keep their eyes peeled.

There are also a number of merchants offering special discounts and raffles on Springfield Avenue. Julie Doran of the Springfield Avenue Partnership promised, “We will keep adding to the list as we receive the information: Small Biz Saturday on Springfield Avenue.”
