Dr. Khyati Joshi returns for a workshop on the construction of race that is a follow up to the Talking to Children about Race and Culture session held last spring. That workshop was designed to engage teachers and parents in becoming culturally competent in their interactions with each other, their students, and their children in this diverse community. This time, we will explore the whole concept of race—the social construction of race, the biology myths, and how our institutions and culture continue to shape race in ways that privileges whiteness.

We will look at the roots of the racial idea and ask: How do we come to terms with the social practices that have benefited one racial group over others? How do we talk about race at home and to our children? Participants will receive talking points to use with family; professional development hours will be available for teachers.

Dr. Joshi’s areas of expertise include race in education and race in America, immigrant and second-generation Americans in K-12 Education, religion in schools, multicultural education. She is the author and co-editor of many publications including: New Roots in America’s Sacred Ground: Religion, Race, and Ethnicity in Indian America (Rutgers University Press, 2006), which received the National Association for Multicultural Education’s 2007 Philip C. Chinn Book Award; Americans In Dixie: Race and Migration in the South (University of Illinois Press, 2013); Understanding Religious Oppression and Christian Privilege (Sense Publishers, 2008).
