The following is from a Facebook post by South Orange Village President Sheena Collum. This is the third year Collum has hosted a public event on her birthday that raises money for great local causes. Last year’s recipient was the Food Pantry at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in South Orange; the year before it was the South Orange Rescue Squad.
Friends and Neighbors – My birthday is coming up on the 12th and this year, with your great feedback, I selected an amazing cause to support. So I’m hoping you may love, like, or tolerate me enough to support it as a part of my “Party for a Purpose”. This year we’re going to tackle food insecurity at Columbia High School. Even the smallest of donations can go a long way. So here are the details.
First, you’re all invited – My birthday party (event) is going to be on Saturday, November 18 from 6pm-9pm at the beautiful home of John & Patty Brown-Christenson (48 Crest Drive). I’ll have some food and desserts out from the lovely Diana Hart and I’m asking for you to bring an adult beverage (a bottle of wine) and your generosity of course. Volunteers will be on hand to collect cash or checks.

Second, all donations will go to ensuring that no student is turned away during lunch due to insufficient funds in their account and also launching a new weekend program for high school students faced with food insecurity. This is an effort being led by the SOMSD ParentingCenter, Rent Party, MAPSO Cares, and SOMA Justice: Addressing Race and Inequality.#SOKudos to all of them for bringing awareness to this important issue.
If you can’t attend or want to contribute in advance online, you can do so via GoFundMe (the proceeds are going directly into the Rent Party Pantry).
