From the Essex County Executive’s office:

Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr. announced that Essex Ed, resident groundhog at Essex County’s Turtle Back Zoo, saw his shadow on Groundhog Day, Thursday, February 2nd. The Groundhog Day legend states that if the groundhog sees his shadow, we will have six more weeks of bad weather. In addition, Essex Ed predicted the Atlanta Falcons would defeat the New England Patriots in this year’s Super Bowl.

“I prefer warmer weather, so I’m a little disappointed in Essex Ed’s prediction. I was really hoping for spring weather to arrive early this year,” DiVincenzo said. “It may be cold outside, but it’s still a great time to come out and Experience Essex, and our wonderful Turtle Back Zoo and South Mountain Recreation Complex. Waiting for Essex Ed on Groundhog Day creates excitement about Essex County’s Turtle Back Zoo and highlights its role as an educational resource,” he added.
