Cub Scout Troop 20 in Maplewood is petitioning the Cub Scouts regional council to allow 8-year-old Joe Maldonado to join its troop after he was barred from becoming a cub scout in a Secaucus troop due to the fact that he is transgender, according to The Record of Bergen County.

Cub Scout Pack 20 leader Kyle Hackler told The Record on Wednesday that he and his den leaders were displeased with the decision of the council, which it made after some parents in the Secaucus troop complained. Hackler said he had petitioned the Northern New Jersey Council of Boy Scouts of America to allow Maldonado to join Troop 20.

“I said in the email that I was displeased, and asked if there is any way that Joe could join my pack,” Hackler told the Record.
