Maplewood Library Summer Reading Program Was One for the Books!

The following is from the Maplewood Library

While summer may signal an end to school, the pool reopening, vacation, and camps galore, it also signals the beginning of the library’s busiest time of year. The Maplewood Library Summer Reading Club is an opportunity for children, teens, and adults alike to read and maybe even win some prizes along the way.

This summer was definitely one for the books! Children read and wrote for just over 25,000 hours, a ten year record high. The Summer Reading Club boasted 172 Champion Readers, which are children who spend 50 hours or more reading and writing. Middle and high school students read over 300 books, and there were over 40 adults registered for the adult summer reading raffle! While it may seem like Maplewood is a town full of readers, one of the best parts about summer reading is that it is designed for those reluctant readers, children and teens who need an incentive to push themselves to read even when school is out. If anyone saw the prize display case in the children’s room, then they understand the excitement!

In addition to providing an incentive for children to remedy summer slide, knowledge loss that occurs over the summer break from school, participants were encouraged to attend activities at the library that aligned with the theme of Build a Better World. Weekly family service learning projects gave children the opportunity to make a tangible difference within their community. The children made toys for cats and dogs awaiting adoption at the Associated Humane Society of NJ, cleaned up litter in the park and library grounds, and wrote cards for the homebound residents of Maplewood. Children and teens also attended programs involving movement, STEM, art, and writing.

Summer Reading is fully funded by the Friends of the Maplewood Library, whose generous support enables us to offer exciting programs and prizes to our participants.  A big thank you to the Friends of the Maplewood Library and our whole community for another fabulous summer!
