The AV Hero Fund Golf Outing attracted more than 90 golfers for a day on the course and 220 guests for a gala dinner at the Maplewood Country Club yesterday for its inaugural event.

The AV Hero Fund honors the life and legacy of Angelo Vayas, a Maplewood resident and proprietor of the Village Trattoria, who passed away from brain cancer in May 2015. Angelo loved to play golf, and as he fought his disease, the activity became a treasured respite and a chance for him to spend precious time with his two brothers and his friends.

The day and night was an opportunity to celebrate the life of Angelo and remember him just a year after his death. “What a night, what a night!” wrote Angelo’s wife Mary on Facebook, clearly pleased with the result of her and others’ efforts.

Others remarked on the “picture perfect” weather of the day; Mary noted that someone may have pulled some strings on the event’s behalf.

The organization seeks to raise awareness of glioblastoma, the disease that took Angelo’s life (some of the proceeds will benefit the Caroline Vandemark Fund at Hackensack University Medical Center), and also will help provide care and financial assistance to local families who are fighting battles of their own.
