Almost 2,000 young players ages 5 to 14 marched in the annual South Orange Maplewood Baseball/Softball parade on Saturday, a festive start to the 2016 season.

Participants marched in South Orange from New Waterlands Fields to Cameron Field. The Opening Day Ceremony featured South Orange Village President Sheena Collum and Maplewood Mayor Vic DeLuca throwing out the “first pitch.”  Other local officials on hand included Maplewood Township Committeemembers India Larrier and Greg Lembrich, and South Orange Trustees Howard Levison, Steve Schnall and Deborah Davis Ford.

The Columbia High School Marching Band led the parade; students from Mark Murphy’s Music School sang; and the CHS Unaccompanied Minors performed the National Anthem.

South Orange Recreation Director Kate Schmidt thanked the hundreds of volunteers and sponsors (there are 97 sponsored teams this year) for making the program such a success.

Now let’s play ball!
