From the South Orange Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs:
Four years ago, in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Cameron Field in South Orange, the South Orange Department of Recreation & Cultural Affairs hosted a “Vintage” baseball game between the South Orange Villagers and the Flemington Neshanock. The Neshanock Base Ball Club travels and plays a schedule versus opponents playing by 19th Century rules, using authentic 19th Century equipment and wearing old-style uniforms. As was the custom at the time, all fielders play barehanded, no gloves.
This game has now become an annual event in South Orange. After 3 years of defeat, the Villagers won last year’s contest 11-10. The 5th annual game will take place on Cameron Field on Saturday, September 15th at 12:00 pm. The event will also include a short lesson on the history of the game and a recitation of “Casey at the Bat” by Brad “Brooklyn” Shaw.
Some of our players have “retired” and we have a few openings. No tryouts are necessary, just a willingness to play and have fun. Players must be 18 or over. If you are interested in playing in this game, please email Kate Schmidt at [email protected] A complete uniform is provided to all players on the team.
