The following is from Department of Health and Animal Control News:

With winter fast approaching, the Township of South Orange Village wants to remind residents of a recent ordinance concerning leaving pets out in the cold. Here is a copy of ordinance 69-2(B):

  1. Animals left outdoors- It shall be unlawful for any person to leave any animal outdoors and unattended for a continuous period of time without water and a suitable shelter (doghouse). If the National Weather Service has issued weather alerts or storm warnings; no animal shall be left outside during snow storms, ice storms or thunder storms. The animal shall be considered outside regardless of access to an outdoor doghouse or similar structure, unless such structure is a properly functioning climate-controlled and weather resistant structure.

If a resident suspects an animal is in danger in the cold weather, please call the animal control officer at (973) 378-7715 x 7711.

Residents are reminded to use common sense when bringing their pet outside during the cold weather. Pets should be monitored when outside and brought back in upon finishing their business.
