To the Editor:
I served on the Board of Education for almost 10 years and had the pleasure of serving with Elizabeth Baker for two of those years. You will not find someone who works harder to make sure that EVERY student in our district has access to a quality education and the supports necessary to be successful. As Board President for the last two1 years, Elizabeth has consistently pressed administration on the allocation of resources and the implementation of policies to meet student needs. South Orange-Maplewood is a great school district, but we have significant challenges and issues competing for limited resources. Elizabeth is committed to informed and transparent discussions and decisions about these topics.
Elizabeth has a keen ability to understand the big picture and implications of major decisions, while also mastering the details. Elizabeth guides the Board to always keep the students’ interests at the heart of all decisions. As President, Elizabeth has taken the brunt of community frustration when issues arise, but she has met these challenges head on with compassion and a determination to improve the experience for all students in our District. The Board of Education needs the resolve and continuity of Elizabeth’s leadership.
I’m also excited that Robin Baker is running for the Board of Education again, after serving a term from 1998 – 2001. Robin will be able to draw on her past Board experience and hit the ground running. As the parent of an accomplished scholar and champion athlete, Robin knows what SOMSD can offer our students. However, she is acutely aware that individual student opportunities and experiences vary drastically and she is committed to finding effective solutions that give all students the opportunity and support to meet their potential.
Please join me in voting for Elizabeth Baker and Robin Baker on November 7th.
