From Maplewood Deputy Mayor Frank McGehee:
On Tuesday, May 14, 2019, vote for the future. Vote to re-elect Sheena Collum for South Orange Village President.
I have had the opportunity to work with Sheena on a number of key initiatives and have witnessed her tireless energy, conviction and passion to serve our South Orange-Maplewood community. Over the past two years, Sheena and I have served on the Shared Services committee. During that time, we have spent countless hours in meetings digging into the inner workings of our fire departments, analyzing financials, and reviewing reports. Throughout this process, Sheena has been a strong collaborator, displaying great attention to the facts and a willingness to listen to all sides – while representing the best interests of South Orange residents.
I’ve always been impressed by Sheena’s seemingly infinite capacity to take on the tough issues head on – from improving economic development to pushing the state to address the well-documented shortcomings of NJ Transit; to building a diverse community culture to driving strong financial management to standing for social justice. Sheena has done it all.
Sheena’s ability and agility to mobilize our community is legendary. I will never forget how a visit with Sheena at Above one Saturday evening to catch up resulted in a spontaneous visit to the Stop & Shop on Valley Street to start a supply drive for families impacted by Hurricane Maria’s devastation in Puerto Rico. Using Facebook Live (of course) our impromptu Stop & Shop telethon raised thousands of dollars in less than one week. As Joe Strupp later put it, Sheena had once again turned Facebook Live into “a high art form” to benefit the greater good. She even turned our friendly rivalry about MAPSO vs. SOMA into a Facebook poll which was met with widespread commentary from residents. Classic Sheena!
What is not well-documented is the amount of time Sheena spends behind-the-scenes away from the spotlight and off of social media to both understand and educate residents and local businesses on the key issues. Simply stated, Sheena puts South Orange first over everything.
Sheena has brought a bold and innovative vision to the office and has delivered meaningful results including – generating hundreds of thousands of dollars in community reinvestment, being selective in green lighting development projects to make sure they align with South Orange’s strategic framework and continuing to evolve community engagement.
That’s why I can’t think of a better candidate for Village President than my colleague and good friend – Sheena Collum.
